    Something Random

Mainly I wonder if Eugene died or whatever did happen? I have lost interest in the minor differences between hard drives. When I started reading SR in 1998 hard drives were a major bottleneck in computing performance. Today with 24GB of RAM (and more to come) it really doesn't matter much for...

Come to think of it, most forums don't last very long. I've been posting for 12-13 years and the majority of sites no longer exist or the forums were recreated. I've probably lost over 5K of posts in 8 forums, that is not including the MBF. I'm only active on 2-3 forums now. :(

    Monitors w/massive brightness range

I don't think it is very good for the human eye to be forcibly multitasking in extrenme contrast all the time. It only gets worse with age. There is no way I would be on display in the window on a public street either. Some HDTV monitors have autobrightness, no? I think you could start...

    Monitors w/massive brightness range

That is an awful way to work on a monitor. :sqnt: Ideally the background should be evenly illuminated and relatively neutral gray or white in color with minimal distractions. If you want to look out the window once in a while to rest the eyes consider placing the monitors at an angle to the...

    question Larger TVs

I turned off all the protection and the site was there after rebooting. I did not realize that there were subpixels in the LCD TVs. It makes sense given the relatively large size of each pixel in a large 1080i panel compared to a typical computer LCD with 0.22-0.27 pixel pitch.

It looks like the off-axis limitations are partly mitigated by having some pixels in each diagonal direction. Interesting.

    question Larger TVs

So Samsung is still considered a good manufacturer? Would the LN46C670 be a good choice? It is about as expensive as I'd like to justify on a TV; it's not like a camera lens or something critical. How do you feel about other brands, for example the quadraphonic color of Sharp or perhaps a...

    question Larger TVs

So after adding two TVs in two weeks I'm on a bit of a roll. :) Now I seek an LCD TV in the 42"+ category to replace the 1990s 27" CRT. I can probably fit in a 46 incher if I move a few items of furniture, but I have no interest in a larger one. The main criteria are obviously the image...

    Noise Cancellation

I have several kinds and they are not as good as foam if you simply want noise reduction. The noise cancellation only works at some frequencies. I usually use the low volume range on the mp3 player to avoid potential damage.

Recommendations for a USB 3.0 card

I have a couple of USB 3.0 adapters which seem to work similarly. I think mainly an NEC chipset is used. One of the adapters was SIIG as was the 2.5" enclosure and fan-cooled toaster. I figured that being the same brand they would work well together and they have. Now my new system has...

180/2.8 is the cheap way for decent speed and AF. f/3.5 is 2/3 stop slower and AF is - well you know how that lens is. 70-200/2.8 would be fine for most purposes and is more versatile.

    Bathroom TV

Why exactly do the digital TVs take so long to turn on? We all know that an LCD panel only takes a couple of seconds at most to illuminate. This TV turns off after some minutes with no signal, and those ~8 seconds until power on are annoying. My 1972 Trinitron was faster.

The TV and receiver are set up semi-permanently in the bathroom and working well. :thumbright: I had to unplug the telephone and clock for the time being, leaving the emergency light. From observation I think the cheap LCD TVs are basically a laptop panel in a box. The vertical viewing angle...

    Bathroom TV

I have the product now. The transmitter and receiver are fairly basic, with only a power switch and 4-channel selector. The directional mini dish antenna is nice. It works well at the closer distances, but picks up noise and zappies through more than one wall. The audio level is quite low...
