It sounds a bit like magic fairy dust because the details as to how / what it does are so vague.

I guess they didn't decide to trade error correction information for more user accessible space.

I read that earlier today and left with myself pondering "why?" It seems like it pairs an underpowered CPU to a decent embedded GPU.

    When to Build New System

I would think they would have small sheets of it in the stores for a lot less than that, but I haven't been in a best buy in ages.

Lowes used to sell Peel & Seal. They still may. Local car audio shops should sell Dynamat as well. Heck Best Buy might even sell Dynamat.

Folder Size (Most useful utility for managing HD space I've seen in a long time)

That looks like another good program... I had played with FolderSizes before, but it costs money and I'm cheap. I went looking for alternatives when I came across Folder Size and WinDirStat.

Folder Size (Most useful utility for managing HD space I've seen in a long time)

I might have been a tad too fast to praise this as the best thing since sliced bread. If you allow it to scan removable disks (configurable) you can't properly eject them without stopping the service. :(

Folder Size (Most useful utility for managing HD space I've seen in a long time)

I can't believe I only just came across Folder Size today. Now you can finally see where all your HD space is going! :king:

    RAID with mixed disk technology

It sounds like you're really talking about creating an online real time synchronized "backup", not a RAID-1 array. I don't have much experience with these. My opinion is you'd rather have a scheduled backup than a real-time one. If we hypothetically assume the "backup" is instant or real-time...

    RAID with mixed disk technology

You meaning using both SSD's and spinning disks in the same array? Basically in pretty much all RAID arrays you get the performance of the slowest drive by the number of drives. So, for example if you made a RAID-5 array out of 2 500GB 7200RPM drives, 1 500GB 10,000RPM drive, and 2...

Hitachi Data Systems to spin of storage division

Yeah, but no one looks at their spinning HD as an elegant art form or a mechanical achievement. Personally, I think spinning disk storage will be with us for quite a while longer, since I don't see flash technology getting cheaper than spinning disks any time soon. A key reason is that flash...

That seems highly unlikely. Samsung 2 TB, eco-5400 rpm

No. I still don't want advanced format drives on my RAID card. I don't think there is in my case. I have to admit I was a little surprised at how much faster the F4 is vs. the F3 simply by going from to 3 platters from 4 though.

Uh... WD bought Silicon Systems and now sells SSDs. Samsung also makes SSDs. Yeah, but they're all basically selling the same drives. With the exception of Intel and Samsung who are rolling their own controllers, there's only the Indilinx, and SandForce based drives regardless of whose name...

    Blue-Rays for XP64?

Neither has the disc decryption portion of the equation covered, which is why I didn't mention them in my summary. They probably have the best shot of being able to play back a blu-ray under XP x64, but that would be movie only playback, no menus or anything, and he'd need AnyDVD HD.

Well, I went and did your homework for you. Arcsoft Total Media Theater 3 says it needs: Windows XP SP2 32-bit, Windows Vista 32/64-bit and Windows7 32/64-bit PowerDVD 10 says it needs: Microsoft Windows 7, Vista* and XP SP3* (Windows XP Service Pack 3 is required) WinDVD Pro 2010 says it...

    Help with inexpensive "Server" build

So the system seems to draw ~130W at idle with 10HDs spinning (8 x 5400RPM / 2 x 7200RPM). I guess that's not too bad. I also got Newegg to refund me the the missing $5.37 too. So far I'm pretty happy with the system.
