    Hard drive Failure Rates

I have over a dozen of the 4TB 5900RPM drives. There are only a few tens or hundreds of hours on the drives, which are normally used for backups or offsite archives.

It looks like they use consumer drives in NAS or SAN, etc. I'm not sure how that equates to PC use, but all my 3-4 TB Seagates are working just fine.

    Haswell Cooling

I tried several greaser jobs and types. The CPU is fixed at 4.5GHz on all cores with no throttling. The Cooling Master HSF would reach well over 90 deg. C, but the Zalman is about 10 degrees cooler. The temperatures during continuous raw file conversions are in the 50s or so. Frankly this...

    Haswell Cooling

On the prime 95 the temperatures are well into the 80 (deg C ;)) range after 40 minutes, but the CPU is stable. I guess it's fine for normal use where the CPU is not very busy.

Thanks for looking into this. However, I always use 176 for the degree symbol. I'm getting ø with 248. I use the 176 (°), 177 (±), 181 (µ), and 174 (®) quite frequently for work as they function in most Windows fonts and across applications.

Of course it goes lower, but I meant the ID voltage. That seems to be the max voltage under load. The BISO in this board is oddly arranged, so perhaps I am missing something. What are your temperatures at 4.5GHz with the Intel burning test?
  16. LunarMist

    Haswell Cooling

I noticed that the default voltage is 1.24, which is perhaps higher than needed. It's running cooler at 1.20V. I guess the voltage could go even lower if it is stable.

    Haswell Cooling

Since I cannot edict the post due to the bug... What are you using for the voltages? I'm wondering if the defaults are not ideal or if the 2010 RAM (XMP 1.65V at 1600) has anything to do with it. I was not planning to buy new RAM.

    Haswell Cooling

I don't recall any plastic layer. The Cooling Master was better than the retail, but now the Zalman is on the CPU. At least it's not going up to 85°C anymore.

 I ran some goofy benchmark and the GPU reached 59°C max. The 200mm side fan is blowing right on the passive heatsink, so that must be helping somewhat.

    Haswell Cooling

For some reason I'm finding the 4790K to be running rather hotter than expected. I assumed that the 5930K would be a cooling nightmare due to the 6 cores and OC from 3.5 to 4.5. However, the 4790K is more of a problem although it is barely on the OC. I've tried three HSFs and there is some...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I have a bunch of 1TB SSDs that are rarely used. I was planning to put a couple in the computer, but am now wondering how long they will be useful. I read about an even faster (1TB) Samsung M.2 SSD, but it's only for Apple or some other OEM purpose.

    Smallish Case

What are the smallest tower cases for ATX? I know everyone is buying the mini ITX/micro ATX boards, but I already have the mainboard/CPU/HSF and want a case that is smaller than the typical 9/10 bay mid tower. It will have an optical drive, a removable 3.5" dual bay, and only two internal 3.5"...

I estimate it's about 180mm or so on the longest side. 850W is sufficient according to the calculations, since there is one low-power video graphics card. At this point I will be happy if it does not blow up.

    problem Dying Computer

Thanks, but I bought the 500R case mainly because it has a fan LED switch which can be used for four of the hard drives. It's a good, but unremarkable case. I need at least 3x5.25" bays for the drive trays, so the front should be the open design.

    problem Dying Computer

The 200mm fan covers a large area, but there are plenty of open grilles and the top is basically open. I'm sure it will be plenty dusty soon. I replaced the rear fixed 800RPM fan with a 4-pin Noctua PWM fan and set it to run from ~800RPM at idle to 1500RPM under CPU loads. The three intake fans...

    problem Dying Computer

So far I'm not seeing much difference in some apps; certainly the gain is clearly less than +50% from the hexacore CPU. Some are maybe 1/3 faster. I have noticed that it is possible to throw multiple instances of some apps at it and the speed barely slows down, whereas the 4790K is nearly half...

    problem Dying Computer

I started all over on the 5930K setup and after a while somehow got everything working, even all 8 of the rear panel and the 4 USB 3.0 port headers used for the front panel. It can be clocked to 4.5GHz, but is unstable after that and I'm not going crazy on the voltages. I ran the LinusPack...

Now I'm on the old XP system. :( The MSI X99s board doesn't seem to have any method to overclock. The CPU speed and BCLK are always auto. I updated the BIOS and donwloaded the latest drivers. The 4790K is much faster than this POS 5930K setup. Although I installed every USB driver in the...

    problem Dying Computer

With any luck I will find out this weekend. I suppose it depends if 4.4Ghz is feasible with the 5930K. It's not difficult to keep all 8 threads of the 4790K busy most of the time, so I'm hoping 12 can help. Even if the 5930K is only 25% faster, it will be worthwhile as I don't upgrade very often.

Thanks, I've binned that idea. So now I have some kind of basic 4790K system sitting on top of a case and running OK. I forgot that CPU had built-in video which is nice. It is using a mid-sized HSF they had at the store, but is not so good at 4.4GHz and full load. I'm using some ancient RAM...
