Don't buy cheap filters. Frankly you probably only need a polarizer to start with. UV filters are really only needed for harsh environments and ND mainly for moving water or videos. GND filters are another story, but not something to start with. Mostly I use SanDisk or Lexar memory cards in...

    Cruise ship with kid?

At that age, I'd leave the child with family. The restrictions you've imposed make it seem not like much of a vacation. :( You will have to fly to most of those locations unless the cruise is longer than a week or you don't see much of anything. If you don't do any day trip excursions, you...

I don't know what your subjects are that will work with all primes. In the 70s and 80s I used primes as did most people, because the zooms were slow and limited in IQ. However, switching lenses frequently and trying to find the perfect spot to match the composition is sometimes impossible and...

The DXO lens test are particularly not useful. They take a composite score of composite scores. Photozone, TDP, lenstip, etc. do at least some actual tests, not just reviews as some sites do. The review by photographers seem to be the least reliable as they often get the equipment for free or...

Why are they doing that? I'm naturally very suspicious of anything that is free or low cost. Will MS be spying on everything or taking control of the computer with no recourse, etc. in the future?

The RAM is Sporty Crucial Ballistix 2400. I don't recall the memory settings, but they are only a little over the base voltages if that. The CPU is a bit higher voltage. I would not claim that the computer is perfectly stable at 100% CPU all day; it would be too hot for good longevity. It...

    Synology ds2015xs -review

If the 2015+ version can be used with the 10GbE eventually, it should be worth a little more than the 1815+. In the worst case, I will trash the NASD and use the drives for something. The drives are most of the cost anyway. Now I just have to wait for the next Dr. visit before proceeding.

I create content, primarily still photos. I'm not sure how the hardware list is transferred to the signature. Perhaps it doesn't work because I use the old Windows 7. The main machine is a 5930K at 4.5GB with 64GB RAM. There are three SSDs from 256-1TB including the Samsung M.2 XP941...

What is the deal with all the Crucial drives? Is the MX200 the successor to the M550 or something else? The BX200 series seems cheaper than the MX200, but how do they differ? It's disturbing that prices for 1TB drives seem to be about the same as 1.5+ years ago.

Yet you could do that with 6TB drives at almost the same cost. I'm also waiting for the drive (from BH), but now think that it may not be needed if I go for the NASD.

Nope. I drink a little wine now and then, but that's about it. I always thought the hard liquor was for guys born in the 40s or earlier, but I guess not. I suppose there was some resurgence during the 80s with the yuppies and it continues. Of course there are millions of alcoholics, too.

Nikon has not produced a new 135mm lens in about 25 years. I'm sure they will get around to it eventually, but the old-ish Canon 135/2 is good choice in that range if one is not interested in the manual focus Zeiss. The latter is a truly great lens and very close to truly APO, unlike most...

The EOS 1vHS was the first pro SLR to deliver 10FPS with a moving mirror. There have been older cameras like special pellicle mirror versions of the Nikon F2(H) and Canon F1 in the 1970s and then the EOS 1N RS (10 FPS) in the early 90s.

The three main issues with EVF are image delay, battery drain, and limited contrast range of the EVF compared to the human eye looking through glass. They are a long way from resolving the limitations for significant outdoor action. As well, Sony seems to be designed for dwarf-hands so the...

The mirror rapidly moves up and down between each exposure at the normal framing rates. For example the 1DX will do 10 or 12 FPS (12 only at near max aperture) without mirror lockup. It does 14 FPS with jpegs and MLU.

You need a global electronic shutter, which can create other image issues. Some MILCs have them, but the highest quality Sony (36MP) A7r doesn't have it. The shutter has to close and then reopen, which is slower than a DLSR and results in a horrid lag, not to mention that what you see in the...
