Yeah, I'm afraid I'm out of the mix for a while. Not only does the client negatively impact the gaming systems, but my home system is now a fanless box that can't handle 100% CPU usage. I still have a number of servers and other workstations, but not the big iron I once was.

I'll third NOD32. I got it on reccomendation from here a few weeks ago. and now have it installed on a bunch of machines, I also am using their remote admin package and their MS Exchange plugin. All are working very well and without hassle. I was quite amazed at the simplicity of their MS...

Interesting...the OS installed on the drive was "Windows Whistler Professional" according to the boot.ini file. I always wonder why this survives a format...

That's one of the reasons I'm posting it here, Mark. Unfortunatly, I need to put the drive into production tonight, so I'll be destroying the evidence. Any util that can check SMART data can tell the number of times the drive was spun up; that would be enough.

Better. I just installed the drive and it still has data on it :o If I had more time, I'd discover the original owner and let them know they were screwed. Whatever, I'm in a hurry.

I just unwrapped a Samsung 80GB PATA drive from the ABS plastic wrapper it was shipped to me in from newegg. I bought it new for ~$70 about 2 weeks ago. I notice as I'm installing it that it already has a significant amount of dust around the screw heads and sides, clear signs IMO of a used...

Well, swapping optical and cable did nothing. Doing a mobo swap as we speak. Back to a good ol' MSI K8T NEO FSR...stupid SATA driver floppy....

Bump. I need to send in my reccomendation tomorrow. If all you had was an ISDN to the internet and needed to get a LAN onto a VPN, what would you do? What would you buy? I can do almost anything I want within those limitations.

If only they would just market a motherboard with the features I want integrated - Soundstorm, PCI-E attached GigE and SATA, Socket939, 4 DIMM slots, and a top-end graphics card. I'd even put up with it being an nVidia card for the convienece of having it all on the motherboard.

That about sums it up. I have a remote location 30 miles from anywhere, barely in ISDN range, and need an ISDN LAN modem that is capable of serving as a VPN endpoint as well. I've tried 3Com's OCLM series, as well as Netopia's R300. Both claim VPN passthrough capability, neither works. Help?

Going back is clearly the wrong solution. Hosting a webserver, FTP, RDC, whatever behind a router is really, really easy. Do it and thank yourself in all the time you saved from reconfiguring a computer.

From what I've gathered, VPN uses more complicated stuff than just ports; you need to have PPTP(?) forwarding enabled. See if you can set the ICF to specifically allow VPN connections.

From a current thread @ SR, it implys that an ASUS rep stated the cards are for graphics cards only.

I'm of the opinion that most everything will continue the current trend of motherboard integration with the sole exception of video cards. It's been a long time since I had a card besides video in a gaming machine.

Firstly, from what I've gathered, there is only one board that actually has 2x 16x slots. All the "SLI" boards talked about here are actually splitting the 16 channels into 2 8x connections using 16x slots. Secondly, I don;t know all that many people who "upgrade" their systems anymore. I know...

I don't really want SLI, it's just that the only boards I could find were SLI. Having a single 16x slot is all I really want.

This guy wants leading-edge, but under $200 for the mobo would be nice.

I'm looking for a Socket 939 board with 16x PCI-Express slot available today. Anyone? Anything? Newegg doesn't even seem to be equipped for PCI-e. ASUS and Gigabyte both have SLI-capable boards, but I can't find them in the channel. help? Anything else I should be considering?
