    Tyan and nVidia

Very nice indeed. I'd say that qualifies as the "ultimate workstation motherboard" to date. Dual Opteron, Dual true 16x PCI-E, PCI-X@133, SATA II. Drool.

    A little bit chilly

I'll be following my GF to wherever she goes to grad school. I'm rooting for my local ones: Stanford or UCSF. But she only has interviews there, so #3 (where she's already been accepted) looms large: Madison, WI Where it is currently 19F with windchill taking it healthily negative and the...

    A little bit chilly

Last weekend I got to play in an ice storm in Portland, OR. As I was driving through it on my way to Monterey, I throught of Mark as I drove past him with 1cm sheets of ice slowly melting and peeling from my car at 80mph. Monterey was nice, 60/70s all week while I enjoyed the convertible. Now...

The P160 was also quite expensive when it forst came out...I didn't buy it until it came down to $120. I don't think I'll be able to wait that long with this one, though. I mount my LCD screen on the side of my chassis, and the composite case sides would be much better than the 1mm aluminium I'm...

    Ho-Hum year(2005) for hard drives

Seems to be that time again for me as well, though my storage needs aren't as extreme as some of yours. When I encode DVDs using AutoGK, I shrink them to 2GB. Excessive I know, but I'd like to be able to re-sample them back to DVDs without loss. And for audio I'm still happy with 320Kbps ABR...

    Poll: second-worst hard drive

Maxtor for me. I had a great series of drives that would erase themselves if they overheated. A reformat would make them right again, but they were never quiet or fast. I put them at the other end of a 100MBit network connection so I wouldn't notice.

Installing Traffic Shaping/QOS on a Smoothwall

That is an option. I was expecting it to be more... Corporate Server Version 3.0 - $324.00 SmoothTraffic (2 Megabit/Sec)- $540.00 The difference between 1 and 2 Megabit/Sec is brutal. Shame they don't have anything in between.

Installing Traffic Shaping/QOS on a Smoothwall

I'm running a Smoothwall on the T-1 at my game center. The problem starts when someone tries to download something and maxes the connection, immediatly the CS guys are whining about 200ms+ ping times. I'm under the impression that some kind of traffic shaping could solve my problems? The...

:mrgrn: Yes, I will accept all the "I told you so"s now....the ones that come most quickly to mind are Mercutio and Tea, but there were others. I find it really amazing that the systems that have been swapped with 120GB/8MB Samsung SATA drives have no performance decrease at all.

I certainly have the Silent computing bug, but have found Nexus fans at low speed to be a more comprehensive solution than a fanless PSU/alternative exhaust method.
