    Musings on a new PC

Yep, but while I was looking for that, I found this: Yep, those are 4 16x PCIe slots. Shame it's an Intel board, likely the same one Dell used in it's quad-SLI setup.

Want an opinion on power saving for my machine

I'm agreeing with Lunar and Coug on this one, your power draw is much less than that. Considering you can get an AntecNEO HE power supply (80%+ efficiency) and a power meter to get a better idea of your consumption for less than one of the drives.

    Google double plus good

The concern about this tool, like any tool, is in how it is used. Trusting Google to hold my files isn't a big deal for me. Trusting my govornment not to be scum sucking bottom dwellers isn't bloody likely.

Hello? Anyone there? Who turned da lights out?

I actually had the internet in my car 2 different ways today. I have a PCMCIA card from Sprint that is slow as molasses, but works just about anywhere. The other toy is an Alvarion WiMaxx modem that ties in with a local supplier of broadband. He has antennas on the 3 tallest mountains bracketing...

    Webcam hardware/software?

Actually, I have done the same thing. It seems I can never find a stud with a nail or screw, but my fist is 100% sure to catch one between the middle and index fingers of my writing hand. Look on the bright side, you could have found a drywall screw (eww).

I'll have a camera outputting composite video connected to a dedicated computer, via a capture card of some kind. Here's what the customer wants: 1. Live webcasting of video 2. GM Pulls Ads From L.A. Times

The nearest excuse for a commuter rail line is CalTrain, running from Gilroy (40 minutes north by car) to San Francisco (1:20 by car) takes 2:10; a 40-minute drive!. Even the commuter run from San Jose to SF takes an hour, where the drive is 35 minutes. Efficient? I think not.

    The $200 gaming videocard...

The 7800GT is tempting, especially with an Arctic Cooling solution on it. Even though Newegg says otherwise, the package itself only says it's compatible with 6800-series cards (see below), any comments?

    The $200 gaming videocard...

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. I may have to go for a more expensive card then. The X800 isn't quite fast enough for me in my latest home addiction (Need for Speed: Most Wanted: Black Edition). I like to play games at the native res of my monitor (1280x1024) and I like some eye-candy...

    The $200 gaming videocard...

I'm in the market, my stock X800 from gigabyte is nice and fanless, but it can't keep itself cool enough. I'd really like one of the video cards that exhausts outside the case. I currently have my eye on the HIS Hightech X1600XT IceQ, but I certainly don't want to go backwards in terms of...

PCI-based graphics cards are slow, but should work fine as a 3rd monitor. It's not tricky at all, I've even run more monitors using both ATI and nVidia cards simultaneously. Not fun, but possible. Cheap and Easy.
