Alright, back to reality. I hadn't seen Merc's most recent posts when I made my last. Surround it is. Looking for a reciever and speakers. I'll probably take the Klipsch I have and move them elsewhere, so consider me starting from scratch. Getting a reciever like this one? It has so many...

    Audio Equipment

What a silly thought (it's passed now). One of the reasons I specifically stated stereo sound was my focus was because I wanted to concentrate on quality over number of channels. Considering 95% of my source material is stereo, I didn't think more speakers would make an appreciable difference...

Thanks for all the responses so far. Multiple inputs is not an issue, unless I want to have discreet inputs for my computers. I have no stereo, no TiVo, no TV, no DVD player, no turntable....nada. I'm just focusing on my one source mentioned above, and getting out to some speakers. If the...

Merc, Thanks for the response; yours was one of those I would value most of this group, as you have the budget and the interest to provide valuable feedback at this level. I understand that investment at this level requires an exponential increase in investment for a linear increase in quality...

This thread is meant to be a discussion of audio equipment. Both inside computers to the limit of computer-based audio, and viable alternatives at the high-end. This is a topic that I would like to learn more about, and any questions/information on this topic is welcome in this thread. The...

Interesting. It's cheaper than the one I have (X-Plosion) yet physically larger. I wonder what the quality difference is like?

    1TB hard drive

I suspect both the 3.5" and 5400RPM are independantly considered uncool these days. The only reason they all haven't gone to 2.5" is the race to 1TB; which would be a bit more difficult without the larger platters. I wouldn't mind an array of 9 2.5" 250GB SAS drives at 5400RPM. Are there any...

    Something Random

Meh. Hard drives are not a source of energy, so I'm not particuarly worried. I've had chips/caps blow up in the past. The fact that an actual problem (laptop batteries made by sony) causes a non-problem (one hard drive's spectacular failure) to get press is just annoying.

Thanks guys! Aiming for true Heffner style, I got together with a half-dozen female friends and we've been hanging out for the last 2 days. Dancing, drinking, hot tubs, eating, rock climbing (lots of ass-shots doing that), and tonight is the sailing. I need a bigger boat ;)

    Passively cooled S939 solution?

Actually Mark, that looks like a nice board for my needs. The reason I was asking for more PCI slots is because my video card has an oversised heatsink that draws from the bottom. I only have one PCI card (X-Plosion sound card), but it effectively blocks off my video card's intake. Having the...

    Passively cooled S939 solution?

Yes! That's the one I used to use, but newegg doesn't carry it anymore. They only carry the SLI boards and an actively cooled one. I loved the 8 SATA ports and dual GigE on this board. Do you have a recomended vendor where it is available?
  23. ddrueding

    Passively cooled S939 solution?

    1. Passively cooled Mobo 2. Socket 939 3. At least one PCI-E 16x slot Preferably not SLI, as that reduces the number of PCI slots.

    Does Mylar conduct?

I've built a custom lighting enclosure using daylight flourescent bulbs. I have some highly reflective stuff that I think is Mylar, and I'd love to simply wrap it around the back of the bulbs to use as a reflector. However, I know the ballasts jack the voltage up to the tens of thousands of...

    Cold

Eh, It's warmer now...the heater likely won't go on again for another month or two. The climate here is kinda weird. Summer and Winter are both nice and sunny with warm days (70s and 80s). December 2006 desktop PC

$600 Rigs are easy...they just aren't Core 2 Duo. Stick with a X2 3800+ (or a 3600+ if you can find one). If you can keep it S939 as opposed to AM2 you can use the (cheaper and faster) DDR vs. DDR2. Good motherboards with decent onboard video for $100-$130, dual-core CPU for $150. Not a problem...

Congrats on the gig Adcadet! On another note; I'm just about to do another system build. "Hm" I think "everyone is talking about how competitive Intel's new chips are, let's have a look". I just went to install on my new system (old one fried) and it seems to have borked my FF install. For now I've just set the drive aside and done a temp install on another drive. I will at some point attempt to do a recovery of it. BIOS detects it fine, as does Linux when booted to the CD. But it can't be mounted, and it can't be accessed. We'll see what I can do when I have more time.
