Mark, I appreciate your input and you almost have it right. The target isn't particularly young (they typically don't have this kind of money), the customers that are currently interested are in their mid-20s to late-30s. They have been playing for years and feel that it makes/keeps them young...

Illegality won't necessarily slow this customer down. I was hoping for a more technical reason, their software being spyware or the like.

PC Gaming = World of Suck

Generals is a really good RTS as far as balance, tactics, and level design go. But after playing Supreme Commander, I'm going to be really spoiled; this is the best UI I've seen in an RTS. There are a few small points of suckyness, but they are few and far between.

Merc, I'm currently running an "evil" 7950GT, driving a pair of VP2130b @ 1600x1200 each. Supreme Commander is not only multi-core, but multi-monitor as well ;) It also claims DX10, but I doubt that it's much of an implementation. I could seriously use some more graphics horsepower to handle...

    Agloco?

http://www.agloco.com/r/BBCB9405 I know this is a bad idea, my geek sense tells me so. Can someone help me find proof that I can pass onto my client who thinks it's a good idea?

Guys, you're using reason and logic...we are talking about gamers here ;) When I first talked to some potential clients, I talked about a 500GB drive and an iRAM or two for games. They didn't know what it was, and when I told them a RAID-0 array of them wouldn't help anything, they dismissed it.

I'm only on the second mission, but I see your point. What I'm doing is trying to optimize for time. If I were willing to make each mission last for hours, victory would be easy. I think they need to do something to "force" the game forward.

sechs, it's the video card and the number of drives that are going to really up the consumption I think. I would have put in an Antec NeoHE 550W, but bigger is better with this crowd. Sol, capacity is not important nor is reliability. Only speed. For gamers, only raptors will do shy of 15K SAS...

I've found modular cables in P180s to be a must. Theres simply too much opportunity for spare cables to foul the mid-mounted fan, or just obstruct airflow in the tunnel. The Antec 900 is a bit smaller and lighter than the P180, plus it has a window and a cup holder; very useful for LAN parties...

The supreme Court debating the Patentability of Software

I think there is more to the story than that. Because the E4300 is designed to use a lower FSB, it allows a higher multiplier value. Because of this higher multiplier value, turning the FSB up to the same as an E6300 gives you a healthy overclock while still keeping everything else within spec.

This is what I can build for under $2000 (charging about $3000) as a gaming PC. It includes things I would not put on my own system, but that "gamers" traditionally like (windows, 4-disk Rapor RAID-0 arrays, etc). Let me know what you think. Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower...

Ubuntu is my favorite Linux flavor. Let's leave it at that ;) Smoothwall 2.0 has a modified version called "superkernel" that includes support for SATA drives and a number of other enhancements. Vista Ultimate x64 & 4GB RAM

My system is currently running 4x1GB DDR2 800 @ 800Mhz...but that is DDR2 on an AM2 board. I don't think there were any issues on these.

    Folding@Home

I prefer Ubuntu as well, though I don't prefer either enough to actually use it for anything. What type of performance hit do you have running in a VM session vs. running it normally? Microsoft ISA blows major chunks; smoothwall is far easier to deal with.

Will Ford make it past this year?

I think one of the reasons they are so screwed it that they weren't using fixed benefits. The cost of health care has gone up faster than they anticipaterd, so now they are toast. IMHO, offering anything more than a pension is asking for trouble.

What do you think of this roof?

Considering the amount of glass a traditional sun visor would have to cover, I'd say it would be completely impractical. You would need to use some sort of retracting cover that used rails on either side and has a support bar in front for stiffness.

    Free server migration for us...thoughts?

Mark makes a very good point WRT what is causing our outages. IIRC, it was new accounts being added and a forced reboot? If so, wouldn't being the first account on a new server increase the number of new accounts added after us, making the problem worse?

Eh, I doubt it costs much more than a standard windshield to replace; most of the cost is in delivery/installation anyway. I think it would be really cool, particularly at night on Hwy 1 or in SF or NYC (tall buildings)

Debating Intel C2D e6400 vs AMD 4600+ for new system

When I was looking, the 5400+ (2.8Ghz) seemed to be the last reasonable chip before the prices skyrocketed ($269). That would place it between the T6500 (1.83Ghz) and T7200 (2.0Ghz) Intel chips. Is the C2D really that much faster clock for clock?

Pretty sure it would. I'm not an F@H guy, so I can't say for sure. The IceQ system works very well and is quiet, so I suspect 24/7 loading at 100% would be quite possible. I've even hooked up a Zalman fanmate to it in the past to make it even quieter.
