    Access 2000 database upgrade

I suspect that Access 2007 is a bit new to have many experiences with it. But this seems a pretty easy thing to test; how big is the data set and how many users do you have?

    Downgrade to Single Core

My experience with VMs has been mixed. Unless the machines are idle most of the time, or have a core/RAM/HDD all to themselves, the performance has been lacking. Also, MS' tech support guys won't guarantee a fix on a VM. They will provide their "best efforts" and thats it.

    Backing up my data

I would set up a system where the other two machines grab a copy of the data at scheduled intervals. Free, easy, and double-redundant. The SyncToy that Merc referred to looks great.

    CD/DVD Cases

I'll second Merc; scratches aren't your problem, the media available these days just sucks. I remember reading somewhere that the best way to archive something is to keep it on hard drives that are well taken care of.

Best compression program (7-zip, WinZip, etc)

JPGs aren't going to compress much no matter what, so you are probably looking at a 25GB dataset. 5-6 DVDs. Be sure that the program you are using will create multi-volume sets so you don't have to break it down manually.

    Document Management System

Expensive and simple? Sounds like a fun project. Step one would be getting everything onto a single file store. If people are saving to their desktops, nothing will save them. Server 2003's shadow copy/previous versions might be the best way to go; considering AutoDesk needs direct file-level...

Best compression program (7-zip, WinZip, etc)

What amount of data are we talking about? These days, most document collections don't need compression at all. Obviously, if it is over 4.7GB than compression could be worthwhile. As far as redundancy goes, why not just make multiple copies, stored in multiple places?

What do you think of this roof?

Wow, that is more than I expected. I've done about 750k miles in the last 10 years, and the only windshield I've had to replace was when my mother kicked it from the passenger seat.

What do you think of this roof?

Sol, Although this windshield is bigger, it doesn't include electronics of any kind; it's just a big piece of glass. How often do people around here replace windshields, anyway? I've replaced one in a decade, and it was my mother's fault.

Good thinking/planning Bozo. I've been thinking of building a house for quite some time now (floor plans all over my desk for years) and have always thought of 2x6 walls and sound/thermal insulation as obvious value-added things. I was just wondering where such things were standard.

I guess I trained myself too well in the days of limited RAM. I close everything when I'm not using it. An inconvienent Truth and Global warming

I think this is the bigger point. Relying on things we can't make ourselves is a risk we shouldn't be taking. Global warming won't threaten the USA significantly for at least another 50-100 years, our dependence on foreign oil will make us vulnerable long before that.
