Solution for RAID5/6 8 Bay SATA DAS

The 5-in-3 enclosures have 5 SATA ports on the back, so you can use them any way you want. The stock fans are loud, but move a crapload of air. If you are the OCing type, your system is probably not quiet to begin with. Perhaps including a complete system spec would be a good thing, so we can...

Solution for RAID5/6 8 Bay SATA DAS

As I'm sure you've noticed, going to an external array gives some crappy choices in terms of connection and RAID card (as well as costing quite a bit). Considering the cost of just the enhance enclosure alone, I'd look at getting a larger computer case and doing it internally. Based on my...

    Something Random

I never take home left-overs from restaurants for this reason; they always become science experiments. I also only try to keep a few items in the fridge, that way nothing is forgotten for too long. This would be a good use for the LCD-screened refrigerators; forget building a shopping list, I...

Who cares what OS you run?

Of course it's disturbing. It's lazy, self-protecting, and shows a lack of caring for the customer's best interest. Traits very common to MS-only tech houses. I don't like it; that's why I keep screwing around with Linux.

    Elections Have Consequences

Merc, It was good to read your post. Well spoken views, that are relatively centrist, that I disagree with ;) I was a republican before they made religion, reduction of personal freedoms, and monumental corruption part of the package. If they would get rid of that crap and go back to a small...

    RFC: SOHO NAS solutions

Finished copying all the data to the drive. Considering it is my multimedia storage, read speeds are what is important. With the drives in RAID-5 and GbE with 7k jumbo frames, I'm getting 9MB/second; plenty for my needs.

    Elections Have Consequences

This reminds me of some things my old couple's therapist said. Even if a couple start by nearly agreeing on a topic, they will slowly change their views in an attempt to make the average between them represent where they actually stand. Of course, since both people are doing this at the same...

    Elections Have Consequences

I understand that that is true of 90%+ of the US population (aka. morons, unwashed masses, sheep, etc.); but if one were interested in starting a conversation with intelligent people, it would make more sense to get the common ground established, so it could be used as a basis for debate. No?

Who cares what OS you run?

My (brief and unqualified) opinion: If you are not in a position to make decisions for others, and what you have is working fine, than you shouldn't care about the OS wars. If, however, you are a "decision maker"; it's part of your job description to know everything about everything and be able...

Looks like those drives are ~$650US each, and the controller is another ~$800US. So 650*4+800= $3400. These are reportedly $350 each and boast: 32GB capacity 62MB/sec transfer rate 0.12ms access time 4 of those in RAID0 (of course) on one of these So 350*4+280=$1680 You end up with half the...

Fastest SCSI System built by German magazine?

Any of them, really. 90% of mainstream stuff is seek limited, and just about any SSD will have much faster seek times. For that kind of money you could likely get a decent-sized one with good STR as well. I'll have a look and get back with some options.

Fastest SCSI System built by German magazine?

Considering how much they spent on HDDs and CPUs, I'm dissapointed at the small maount of RAM; I would have gone with at least 8GB. Further, I would have gone without the 15K SAS array all together, getting an SSD instead.

How to backup a Mac to Thumbdrive?

I just need them to be able to verify the backups. Your client needs a TeraStation at home and upgraded internet connections. The FTP server built-in should provide adequate security for the backup, and it would be separate from the kiddie-killer.
