Is Gateway still in some form of bankruptcy? Weren't they in trouble for like a decade?

OEM software copies are available, and for about the same as the retailers charge; one way or another it isn't a significant difference. If you like your family and are able to support them, you should build them yourself. If they are too far for house calls, send them to Dell.

    Least awful vomit box

Mark brings up another point (I don't mean to derail too much); are there any small system builders in your areas that you would recommend? All the "small shop" machines I run across have PC-Chips motherboards in them or mega-flimsy plastic cases with windows and multi-colored lights.

    Least awful vomit box

I recommend Dell a lot. Of all the vomit boxen, I consider them the least vommit-ish. They are particularly nice if you format and re-install the OS only, then get the latest drivers from the website. I do this for all the clients that I don't actually want to support; either they are far away...

    Quiet 120mm fan

Yeah, I liked the looks of it as well. My only concern was how it's size would impede the airflow of the exhaust fans, and the airflow to the GPU. I have a passively cooled 7950GT, and it gets fussy if there is no airflow over it.

Will Ford make it past this year?

Wow, that is ugly. The first thing they need to do is lose the speech impediment when introducing themselves, then hire a design team that is at least headed by a fourth grade graduate.

    Quiet 120mm fan

    It's a platform-type downward-firing heatsink big enough for 2 120mm fans. Including the fans it's over 1kg.

This is probably your best bet for keeping the motherboard cool; I'm considering one for my soon-to-be Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3. I can't stay away from the C2D OCing goodness...

    My new system

Something that does annoy me. In Vista's "experience index", every component of my system scores a 5.9 (the maximum) except for my 6000+ CPU! (5.4) My old 4200+ scored a 5.0. The only AMD system I have heard of that got a 5.9 was a 4x4 quad-core system. I wonder how Merc's super-overclocked C2D...

....and I actually do like Vista. With a system such as mine, sluggish performance isn't really an issue.

    My new system

Good catch Coug! The CPU swap was done 2 days ago; I couldn't resist after the prices went down. My old 4200+ 65W will likely end up in a 1U server somewhere, unless someone here is interested...

That was actually about my max as well. Strangely, that was when I was in my best shape (age 19). Seriously strong, I was teaching/competing in sailboat racing every day for nearly a year.

Using wonderful Google to convert from rocks to an actual measure of weight; and considering we are the same height, you actually aren't that heavy. I'm 13 stones myself, thought I should probably loose 5lbs and re-allocate 10-20lbs.

One good thing to say about WD Raptors. They still have Molex power connectors on them. It's a good thing since I snapped the SATA power connector off when dropping in my new CPU.

    Car Computing Thread

I appreciate the offer MaxBurn, but this will be kind of a project for me. Just getting a computer in the car is pretty easy; I even have a touch-screen tablet with a 120GB HDD and HD Audio that I could use. But I'm specifically looking into doing and integrated, high-end installation.

    No Boot Trouble Shooting

The only time I had a CPU go bad was when I put a 486 in a socket 7 backwards (motherboard supported 486 & Pentium). And that went bad in a smoky/melting kind of way. Actually, I have destroyed CPUs by having them yanked out of the socket by HSF suction...but both required intervention...

IT is all about magic. When I'm called in to work on something, they don't know what it is and when I'm done they don't want to know what it was. They provide a possible symptom and say "fix it". That's why we can charge the money we do. Plumbers, mechanics, and doctors don't have it so easy...

YOUR FAVORITE VERSION OF MSFT OFFICE?

I'm using Office 2007 Ultimate. I dislike activation, but honestly it isn't a big deal effort wise; it just takes a tiny part of your soul. I'm with Merc on the new ribbon UI; some people claim it's hard, but unless you survived by memorizing the locations of stuff, it's hard to see why.

I love them; they are the most effective heatsinks I've ever used. The only reason I have a Zalman now is because they didn't have an AM2 version when I got the new motherboard. The Tuniq isn't going to do nearly as well without a fan attached as it's fins are too close together. When the fins...

The P180 and tower-style heatsinks work great for this. I usually use the Scythe SCNJ-1000, but I have a Zalman with the fan removed and it's working fine as well.

    Quiet 120mm fan

Time: What is your thought on a 92mm being better than a 120mm in any application? A 120mm is larger, and therefore able to move more air at a slower speed. A 200mm fan would be even more effective, if the heatsink were designed to use all the moving air...

    Core 2 Duo on steroids

My thoughts exactly. If the reason they can't run both cores at the faster speed all the time is because of "power/heat requirements" (as he said) than I can take care of those power/heat requirements right here ;)

I hate entitlement crap like that. I work, I get paid. I don't work, I don't get paid. What is so special after working at a place for 10 years that you get more vacation? What is the conceivable justification? Why aren't such things left to the employee for negotiation?
