    My new system

I guess not...I couldn't complain with a 104% overclock. Well I could, and I probably would; but it would really be bragging, wouldn't it ;)

24TB in a single box is now possible.

This is my workstation ;) I felt that even GbE access to my data was too slow, and having another machine just to host my files too complicated. I have a server; but it only gets turned on to take another backup. 1 copy of all my data is local ;)

24TB in a single box is now possible.

I thought it was going to be a $300 MSRP, but I would happily pay $400. Maybe even $450. But now that I can support a large (24+) number of drives; it's not as important to get the largest possible.

    General musings calculating power consumption

Nu jumper (just standard SATA drives) but I hope the 3Ware controller I'm about to hook them up to supports staggered spin-up, then I won't have to get a 1kW PS.

    General musings calculating power consumption

IIRC, the only additional load for a computer is spinning the drives up. 4x running load (20W vs. 5W) is what I remember hearing. My system (see sig) never posts from a cold start (video fails to initialize). All I need to do is power it on, count to 5 (so the drives spin up), then hit the...

    Windows CD Burning not working?

Computer case : Arctic Cooling Silentium T2 Pro

It looks like it blows out the bottom? So it's sucking in hot air from the GPU (not a good idea) and trying to blow hot air down (also not a good idea)? I hope I'm wrong interpreting the diagram. Taking cool air in from beneath the chassis and exhausting it out the front would be preferable...

    4 Sticks of RAM

My vague remembrance is is that your vague recollection is correct. Once you stray from 2 sticks it slowed down. But, if you are actually needing 2GB+, it will certainly be faster to have it!

    Window based air conditioners

    42" HDTV recomendations?

I hope to some day route all the I/O through the HTPC running Vista Media Center, but my mother is a technophobe (relatively speaking, my father is a software developer). To start, it will need to support the inputs that they have now (DirecTV, basic cable, non-HD DVD player, VCR) and the HTPC...

    42" HDTV recomendations?

It is a small room, viewing distance would be between 5 and 10 feet. They are coming from a 27" CRT, so it will be big to them. I'm building an HTPC for them, so even if none of their sources were 1080P, I plan on using that resolution for the GUI and other features (games, picture viewing, etc)

If you were to buy a 42" HDTV this week, which one would it be and where would you get it? Which/how many inputs would you be looking for for a basic home theater? My father has finally decided to replace their 27" Mitsubishi CRT with something decent.

That depends Lunar. Everyone could be up-tight about it, and make a big deal, where people jobs are in jeopardy; or everyone could be laid-back and have a sense of humor about it. That is why I've always loved working for/with small companies; big ones don't have a sense of humor.

    Commutes

Driving around here during rush-"hour" (6:30AM-9AM, 3PM-8PM) is completely impractical. Last night I drove to SF for my father's B-Day dinner; leaving Palo Alto at 4:30PM (GF just got off work). I barely made my 7PM dinner reservation, 25miles/40minutes away.

    Commutes

I agree with JTR's comments about the short work day. My ~100mi/1:15 commute would be much worse if I did an 8-hour shift. As it is I leave around 9AM (when the carpool lane ends) and get home around 3PM (before the carpool lane starts). This combined with how I drive my commute (quite...

    Problem Installing Vista

Well I'm having problems with dynamic arrays above 2TB. Even if I use the GUID method instead of MBR; it still goes offline after a reboot. I settled on creating arrays of 1.5TB (2x 750GB) and distributing the data.

Moving a RAID-0 to another motherboard?

For the record; worked flawlessly. As soon as I enabled RAID support for those two drives in the BIOS, the array appeared and booted correctly. And Vista did a remarkably good job getting all the new drivers (chipset and all) with only a single reboot afterwards.

    Piracy

I use Photoshop for screwing around with my own photos; it's unlikely that anyone else ever gets to see what I do, it's just for fun. MS products I use for profit, so I consider paying for them more morally significant.

    Piracy

Hard Drive Enclosures: well built and reasonably priced?

I agree that solid-state isn't there yet, but I think it's pretty darn close. So close that I would hesitate to design a product that it would practically invalidate. For the uses where solid state is still a ways off (250GB+?) I would still consider 2.5" drives. Even a pair of them are smaller...

Hard Drive Enclosures: well built and reasonably priced?

I think a straight eSATA enclosure, and a separate eSATA-USB adapter would make more sense. If eSATA is available, it would be the obvious choice, and is the cheapest to produce. For those who need USB instead, a basic adapter could do the trick.
