    Wireless Router & cards

The "GL" version is the linux-based model; sporting more memory and a faster CPU (IIRC). This is the one all the aftermarket firmwares are written for. Even if you were going to keep the original firmware, I'd get the beefier model.

    Good gods why? (Vista)

So you're saying Ubuntu "Feisty" has lower system requirements than "Edgy"? I checked the release notes, but I could only find the requirements for the current version. However version 5.10 required 128MB of RAM and 2GB. Version 4.04 requires twice as much RAM.

Best place to buy Samsung HDDs

Newegg doesn't ship drives in retail boxes. They ship them in anti-static bags tightly wrapped with an inch or more of bubble wrap in a larger box full of peanuts. I consider this satisfactory and have purchased hundreds of drives from them with only a few failures (that weren't WD) so far.

    Good gods why? (Vista)

Where did this crazy idea come from? When did a new version of any OS (or any program) *ever* run better on the same hardware? New version = new "features", new features = more computing to be done.

    Building new FAH/main PC

My experience with 64-bit wasn't a colossal PITA, it was just not important at all. Once you have the device drivers for everything, the only difference is that there are two "program files" folders. Sometimes 32-bit apps with extract themselves into the 64-bit "program files" folder instead of...

    Good gods why? (Vista)

Chewy, Your issues are why I don't recommend that anyone upgrade their system to Vista. Even though your system is a powerhouse, legacy support is not a strong point. And as the server version hasn't been released yet, support for server hardware is still a ways off (my 3Ware card is barely...

    Good gods why? (Vista)

Actually, yes. Vista pre-caches the most commonly used apps even before you use them (provided your HDD isn't busy) and clears the RAM if it mis-predicted what you were going to be doing. What is completely unused RAM getting you, anyway? "True." But more importantly. "Of course." Aero is eye...

    Good gods why? (Vista)

I've gone nearly entirely to Vista. All my own systems run it or Server 2003, all my new client machines run it (or Ubuntu). Here I will try to explain why. 1. I like it. I like the new UI. Yes, it is different, and requires a whole new learning curve, but I was trying to be open and accepting...

    Building new FAH/main PC

I had 4GB RAM and a 4GB page file in XP 32-bit for a long time without issue. I'm certain that some swapping did happen, but I'm not sure if the total used (used RAM + used Page) ever exceeded 4GB. No crashes were detected.

24TB in a single box is now possible.

I think it's pretty easy to justify 750GB drives over 500GB ones once the cost of power and SATA ports comes into play.

Owning Vista from the boot : scary stuff

Powering up a Hard Drive when needed

Good idea. Also, doesn't power management only spin up drives that are being accessed? If the drive has nothing but backups on it, and windows is told not to index it, it should only spin up when needed.

Powering up a Hard Drive when needed

Basically you are looking for a way to power up/down the drive? The most elegant solution I can think of is that the Seagate external drives have a power button on the front. Of course, any power strip/switch would do.
