    Interpreting SMART data

Thanks Mark. That is the one that 3Ware pointed me to, but it seemed intimidating (command line stuff that's oddly documented) so I was hoping for a GUI'd tool. After your suggestion, I've revisited it and after some fiddling gotten some stuff to function.

Reminds me of the demonstration march all the illegal immigrants put on in LA a month or so ago. My first thought was "How convenient that they gathered themselves all in one place." I'm sure this will be another wasted opportunity.

Adding a Drive to a RAID 5 array

Writes on RAID-5 depend on quite a lot. Because of the checksum calculation, you will never get write speeds that are faster than one drive; and if the processor on your RAID card isn't fast enough, it may be much slower than that. My Bufallo Terastation is CPU limited to 6.5MB/sec for writes...

    Interpreting SMART data

Bozo, Are you saying that those programs can read the SMART info for the drives behind my 3Ware RAID controller? Or that I can copy/paste the raw data into them somewhere? Because I can't see any information either way about either program...

    How porn is wrecking relationships

So let me get this straight...he is saying that men are watching porn and therefore becoming uninterested in their spouse? So is the opposite of this that women use sex toys and are uninterested in their spouse? My first response would be that it's liberating people who are in unhappy...

Adding a Drive to a RAID 5 array

RAID-5 arrays have many problems; slow write speed, difficulty of data recovery if more than one drive fails, slow rebuilds/verifys. These are only "worth it" IMO if you can get some form of redundancy with very little drive overhead. For my array, only 17% of my drive capacity is taken up with...

Does your computer really take that long to power up? I think your two options are the BIOS "Wake on time" setting, or setting the BIOS "power restore" mode to "always on"/"full on" and getting a separate timer.

    Interpreting SMART data

Well, I have 6 Seagate 7200.10 750GB SATA drives connected to my 3Ware RAID controller. By connecting to the web interface of the RAID controller, I can get the SMART data in the format shown above. Really all I want is the temperature, but I'm not sure where exactly to look. I don't know of any...

Adding a Drive to a RAID 5 array

Provided your RAID card supports "On-line RAID-5 expansion" or something similar, it should be fine. I'm in the middle of doing the same (going from 5 to 6 drives). It will have to rebuild the entire array, mine has taken 4 days so far (out of an estimated 6).
