    I used to use a hosts file before Firefox/AdBlock came around; I haven't had a need for one since. All you need to do to fix it is find out what IPs the links/logos point to and delete those lines from the hosts file; this is a really easy thing to do.

    I'm happy with my Gateway, and I am neutral WRT Dell Latitudes - they are "normal". Acer and Gateway are better, Lenovo is the best. Compaq, HP, eMachines, etc. are all much worse IMHO.

    The last time I did it was because I used the same server for file/print serving and routing. Since I switched from MS ISA to smoothwall, I haven't looked back.

    Our commercial ones at the apartment complex do a through wash in 38 minutes and dry a large full load (including jeans) in about the same time.

    Nope. I've broken the plastic shell of most of mine, and now they are dishwasher safe (top rack ;)) The really small ones I have (Sony micro-something) are totally bulletproof; I've squashed one under my heel without incident.

    IIRC, you need a VLAN of some sort that will convert your jumbo frames to regular frames for other devices. Thats as far as my research got.

    It is designed as a laptop replacement drive (2.5"); I suppose the majority of laptops are still PATA. Mine is SATA, so it wouldn't help me there either.

    If I had to choose, it would be the Zalman stuff that comes in a "nail polish" glass jar with brush. Mainly because it is much easier to apply properly.

    From the "fix" Bozo pointed to, it seems things just work better if one OS partition can't see the other OS partition. This is basically the same as using a boot manager or removable hard drives. I don't think any of these issues would impact a data drive.

    The potential for boot managers to mess things up has always concerned me. When I need to run multiple OSes I give each a hard drive and use the BIOS to pick which one; or just use VMWare.

    If you are OK with the power consumption of your existing PC, that would obviously be the easiest solution. Considering that it will be in another room, noise and space aren't really issues. I'd just throw a hard drive in there and use the Microsoft SyncToy to send things over, it works really well.

    Vista is compatible with XP, but XP is not entirely compatible with Vista. I'd assume this is all one could ask for, considering Vista didn't exist when XP was written.
