I think the automatic transmissions are getting there. I still like manual for the fun factor on a twisty road, but the automatics in BMW, Merc, Audi, hell even VW; just aren't the performance leeches they used to be.

    Matrox Extio

Sweet. About 6 years ago I used a KVM CAT5 extender to keep my PC in another room (quieter), but the lack of peripherals always slowed me down. Now I keep my PC about 8 feet away, tethered by USB to external optical drives on my desk. This would be fantastic, depending on the bandwidth total for...

I saw the "P&S" part and ruled that thread out. I don't think a single thing we've discussed here even applies to most pocket cameras; the adjustments simply aren't there. That is why I got an SLR, so I could learn all this stuff ;)

Please excuse the n00b question... I've been reading a LOT, and one thing still evades me. What property makes a macro lens a different category than a regular lens? Wikipedia says: So for my camera that would mean an object only 22mm across would need to fill the frame? Is the only...

    Multifunction Laser Printer/Scanner

Thanks for the clarification, Adcadet. The other bit of useful information is how big are the individual print jobs going to be. If everyone is just doing 1-2 page docs, then speed is practically irrelevant. If a few people a day will be printing manuals out of the thing, it needs to be faster.

    dSLR thread

After having the camera for about 9 hours and taking about 300 pictures, I've got some ideas about what I like and what I don't. I don't like anything to be out of focus. My favorite shot so far was a 10s exposure at f38 and ISO100 on the 55mm end of the lens. My hands shake way too much. I'm...

    Multifunction Laser Printer/Scanner

Then perhaps our ideas of "high volume" are different. What is the load looking like? How many pages would a "large job" be? How many of these a week? For how many people would this be the default printer?

    Multifunction Laser Printer/Scanner

When it comes to the larger volume toys I either use HP or Xerox. Depending on the volume, you might consider a copier/multifunction. I've had good luck with these, and their primary role as a copy machine makes the cost easier to swallow for a lot of people.

Quite so. I was racing from LA to Hawaii once (transpac), and the night shifts were the worst; minimal crew, everyone is tired (6 on, 4 off - shorthanded). The only thing that made it worthwhile was the stars at night, but if you looked for too long you would lose your balance and fall over.

    Large RAID arrays

Looks like you have things well under control. I noticed a significant RADI5 write speed improvement when I added the battery backup unit and set the card to "performance" mode. I would expect to see speeds around 130MB/s with that setup.

That case looks fine. It also features an inverted motherboard tray, but depending on your motherboard that should be fine. Large RAID arrays

True. But they still only use regular SATA plugs on the back. If I'm going to be stuck with regular SATA plugs, I'll use the Supermicro enclosures (higher drive density and swappable fans for reasonably quiet operation).

What I'm looking for is a hot-swap enclosure that supports multi-lane plugs directly (multi-lane is a single cable that carries 4 SATA channels) to clean up the cabling. My 3Ware card currently has multi-lane connectors on it, and the break-out cables make a mess.

    MP3 player rant

The thing that has always pushed me towards the Shuffle/Nano is the fact that none of them are big enough to hold the entire music collection. I'd love to see a 250GB version. I did that for an old place I used to live. Cut out all the wiring of the house, and routed a single line to the attic.
