    Network Architecture thoughts

I've laid down the law on a few things. None. Everything is internal-only. If they want to have external access (e-mail, for example), I'll find a hosted service that I trust and let them worry about it. I think having all the servers and printers on the same subnet is fine, everyone has...

    Network Architecture thoughts

Yup. I have T-1s to all the sites, and none of them have more than 20 users (most around 7-10), so some performance loss would be acceptible. All servers are at the main office, but some of the workstations also host resources that other users might need to access.

Disclaimer: die-hard import lover ;) I've never seen a domestic interior that could hold a candle to a BMW or Benz. I've never seen domestic power/mpg figures that could match a GTI, Evo, or WRX

    Network Architecture thoughts

One of my clients has 10 offices, all connected via point-to-point VPN. Each office has been given a class C (192.168.0.xxx, 192.168.1.xxx, etc) The main office is outgrowing it's class C; 50 servers, 40 network printers, and 125+ users. I'd like to get the Servers and other static-IP stuff...

    Firewalls n' such

For homes, a Linksys router. For businesses, a Smoothwall. Connecting production machines to the internet is stupid, you get far more control with something filtering traffic in between. 1. Install Smoothie 2. Nuke the servers 3. Scan the crap out of every machine on the network; who knows...

    Port forwarding with two routers

Merc, with you being a Linux guy, you should really try Smoothwall. Particularly with the newly-released 3.0 and the user-written plugins, it is the most capable firewall I've ever used.

Based on my brief playing with the 50mm 1.8, the DOF is plenty at f1.8. It also seems that I can hand-shoot decently as low as 1/6s if I haven't had caffeine all day.

I wonder how many people saw how cheaply they could get a wireless remote, only to discover that the RC-1 (free with some other stuff I bought) doesn't work with the 20D. And that the LC-5 (that does work) is $450. FTS.

Congrats Clocker! I just got home from a 40-hour network troubleshooting marathon. 5 buildings (300+ users), all connected by fiber, one rouge DHCP server. Currently it looks like the cheapest way to 8 cores is: TYAN S5372G2NR-LC - $250 Intel Xeon E5310 Clovertown 1.6GHz - $235ea. $720 But I would probably want faster cores, something like this: Intel Xeon E5345 Clovertown 2.33GHz - $500 So $1250...a bit steep. And I'm not sure about the...

You aren't the first, and won't be the last, but it doesn't make you correct. Let's divide the population into groups. The first group believes that public transportation as it is in NYC is a good idea. They use it regularly, and feel good about helping the environment. The next group are...

JTR, This discussion highlights why public transportation is a waste of time. As has been brought out, "the people" will not accept any compromise from what they are used to, regardless of the other benefits. They won't accept a vehicle with shorter range, lower speed, longer refilling times...

Firefox's spell checker has a very limited range. You have to be very close, and it doesn't have any contextual guessing capabilities. I don't think it would do much good. Further, IIRC, Eric uses a laptop and simply doesn't put much effort into correcting typos.
