    dSLR thread

Some flower pics for Udaman. The 75-300 @ f5.6 blurs the background much better than the 50/1.8 + f1.8 does. I'm sure someone here knows why?

    Borrowing 4TB?

I'm chickening out on that. The bit that is supposed to be 42 for dynamic, that I'm supposed to change to 07, is showing as EE. Not sure what that means, but I like my data too much to be fooling around with it. I'll just hold off for a while.

    Borrowing 4TB?

Flash drives are for the OS and APPs, the RAID-0 of 74GB Raptors are for scratch and games, and the massive chunk of 750GB drives are for data. My car averaged 33mpg, and gas averaged $4.12. About 9700 miles in 2 months. (I was in Russia when the intermediate bill came).

    Borrowing 4TB?

For later integration in my array, I'd stick with 750GB drives. 4000/750 = 6 Drives @ $120 = $720 + Tax = $777 ...and I just got a $1200 gas bill (just my car). I'd like to avoid that for now.

    Borrowing 4TB?

In a late-night moment of stupidity about 6 months ago, I converted my array to a dynamic disk. It hasn't been a big deal, because Server 2003 doesn't care. Now I'm moving to Linux, and it can't see dynamic disks. The only way I've read to "convert" back to a basic disk is to copy the data...

    450D / 40D / 1DMkIII

Thanks for the scare ;) I just spent the morning running around focusing on everything I could and learning everything I could find about auto-focus systems. Conclusions? Although the 450D with kit lens is slower to focus than I'd like, mine doesn't have focus issues. Nor do my other lenses on...

None. To be honest, I didn't even think (or know) about pre-approved whitelists. I just show the user how to add their own exceptions, and to be careful.

    Antivirus/Antispyware tools

NOD32 without question. When a system is infected and running Norton or McAffee, I wipe it clean. When a system is infected and running AVG (frequently happens), installing NOD32 is usually enough to clean it. I consider NOD32 to be protection, AVG to be damage control, and everything else to...

Is Ubuntu the nix that finally brings Linux mainstream?

Think of it as add/remove programs, but better. You can add programs as well from the internet master repository, and it has a search feature and a summary of each program. It also tracks and handles dependencies (eg. .NET framework or Adobe Flash)

    iPhone: what's the catch???

There are a few companies that provide cell phone service. Typically, the cell phone manufacturers (LG, Samsung, Motorola) make a slightly different version of all their phones for use on the different networks. Apple signed an exclusive agreement with AT&T, so that if you want the iPhone (no...

It is a phone without any buttons from a manufacturer with massive markup that you can only get if bundled with a service agreement and only with one cell provider.

Is Ubuntu the nix that finally brings Linux mainstream?

The thing that has stopped me from deploying Ubuntu in a corporate environment is the inability to niche windows applications (Street Smarts, HardDollar, etc). Things like this seem to either work in WINE or not. I suspect I'll end up retaining a WINE developer at some point to make it happen...

    iPhone: what's the catch???

I use Comcast and have no idea what I pay. I'm not trusted with the bills. ;) Russia was...as expected. If I were to use the same standards that I used elsewhere in my travels, it would be nice. But I have interests there, and we even discussed living there. By those standards it is absolute crap.

Suggestions for speeding up a Vista laptop

    iPhone: what's the catch???

My cable internet has never been down in the 18+ months I've had it. In that time my Vonage telephone has never been down. While I have run out of batteries or been in a bad reception zone, my Verizon cell has never disconnected a call except for those reasons. They may not have 99.99999%...

Producer: CD quality isn't good enough

And the other question is, do most people only have stereos that can output CD-quality sound because that is the quality of CDs? If the quality of the most common medium was much higher, would the average person have a better stereo? (Excluding Tannin, of course)

Producer: CD quality isn't good enough

It all depends on your recording quality and your playback device. I don't think I own any audio gear that could do better than what CDs provide.

WD velociraptor. It's nothing if not different

Well that is frustrating. So what you are saying is that the heatsink that makes it compatible with 3.5" brackets won't make it compatible with 3.5" SATA backplanes? Or that once removed, the 2.5" drive won't be compatible with 2.5" SATA backplanes? And that using the drive as a 2.5" drive...

    dSLR thread

After doing my research on the 450D, I was kind of expecting something like this. They seem to have put all the processing intelligence of the 40D in the 450D, making it physically cheaper (body, AF sensors, controls) but still with all the features in there. That is a pretty powerful package...

I didn't want to derail Tannin's laptop thread, but I hadn't thought of this before. Is it possible to boot from a 32GB ExpressCard SSD? Are there any that are fast enough to see the "SSD benefit"? Has anyone here tried it? Googling doesn't reveal much, and the only ones I see are quite slow...

    Thinkpad, worth the upgrade?

I agree with everything Fushigi said except this. LCD backlights are on all the time, having the crystals block the light requires additional energy. Having a white background consumes barely less power than black.

    Thinkpad, worth the upgrade?

My opinion is that the biggest choke points are your RAM and your hard drive, and those can be upgraded in your current system. I would max the ram and get to a 7200RPM boot drive and pocket the change. But on inspection, it seems that there is no 7200RPM drive option in IDE?

    iPhone: what's the catch???

You do realize that you are referring to a clearly mac-fanatic site, right? I heard about the new iPhone, and although it is almost cheap enough to be worth it as a regular phone/mp3 player, it is far from a smart phone.
