    User Outlook inbox is empty?

Office of 50 employees. All running XP and Office 2003, Outlook is connected to an Exchange 2003 on Server 2003. One user has an empty inbox. All other users operating fine. This inbox had many items, now it is empty. The connection to exchange works fine, calendar, contacts, sending, it all...

    Feeding your DSLR (flash memory)

Yup. I finally had time to read the article this morning. I'm using Patriot 8GB SDHC Class 6, which didn't make his database.

    Agreed.

    Feeding your DSLR (flash memory)

The 450D's right-hand grip could be about half an inch thicker. That is my only complaint. It does use SD, but other than the fact I had accumulated CF cards, I have no complaints. They are smaller, not much slower, and hold enough (I'm using 8GB "Class 6" cards).

    Compiling an Ubuntu Kernel?

I've verified that the Ubuntu 8.04 x64 kernel has GPT support, but not LDM. Is there a GUI for choosing options in a kernel compilation? There are at least a hundred options in the command line, and no way I know of to go back to one you just missed.

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

A CRT made for television is not worth anything, really. The last one I worked with was a top-of-the-line 42" Sony (the biggest they made IIRC). S-Video was the best input it took, and 800x600 on a screen that big looks horrible. I would have preferred a 15" LCD with 1024x768, really. It will be...

    Firefox 3 beta

Yesterday, actually. And I'm seeing no difference between the last Beta, all the RCs and this one. I suppose that is the way it should be; just fixing corner cases before release.

    America's suburban dream?

The biggest one you mentioned above (IMHO) is: The reason for lack of discipline in the schools is fear of retaliation from the parents. So this is really one problem; it used to be parents+teachers vs. students, now it is parents+students vs. teachers. The other issue is that every level of...

Quoting from another thread: So, I just took my first stab and managed a kernel panic! Yay! Good to know I haven't lost my touch. What I have learned is that I don't know nearly enough about this subject, but Googling hasn't returned much. Where would I look to see if these features are...

Correct. DVI is fine for everything except (IIRC) protected BlueRay content. Even that is playable, but at a lower resolution.

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

The XP drivers always work fine in 2003 for me. The kernel is essentially the same. The only software that doesn't work is when the stupid programmers intentionally break it. Here is a fanless AGP video card with 2 DVI connections.
  22. ddrueding

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

Correct. They used the spare pins in an s-video connector to sneak out composite cables. They are only accessible with the included composite break-out box. Composite is outdated tech, and it wasn't around long enough to have/keep products in the market.

For only very light gaming, I would get this card. For something more powerful (still not that great) I would get this one.

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

S-Video sucks (limited to 800x600). So does VGA (looks bad above 1024x768 IMHO) The only acceptable connections are: DVI and HDMI. I use a DVI to HDMI cable (they are essentially the same data, just different plugs). Any video card with DVI out should do fine.

    America's suburban dream?

I live in a downtown area now, and am considering moving to the country (10+ acres of land, 0.5 mile to nearest neighbor, 10 miles to town). Suburbs always struck me as the worst of both worlds; you have to interact with your neighbors, but you are still too far to walk to the...

    Monitor Dying?

Bozo's suggestion looks fine, but I would recommend this one. *Dual DVI outputs, so you can run multiple monitors if you like. *Fanless, so no noise (and presumably less heat to begin with). *GeForce 8xxx series, so it supports recent standards (DX10 for Vista) *HDMI support for secure video...

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

I'm not a fan of wide screen either, but it gave me my minimum requirement (1000+ pixels vertical). I love the fact that I can view images @ 100% and still see every pixel; on my 22" 4:3 1600x1200 LCD I had to zoom to 200% to see every pixel; making this one effectively twice as large. It also...

Well, it was moving along nicely until it filled the 80GB of free space on the Raptor array, it then decided to pick on the RAID-5. It won't fill that one up, but it has already taken a 50GB chunk out of it.
  30. ddrueding

    LCD failure rate? Spectre?

Massive power consumption advantage. 99% of it is becoming heat either way, so you can judge by the amount of heat coming off the device. At that resolution (1680x1050), DVI begins to make a difference. DVI sends the signal digitally, and provides specific instructions to each pixel. VGA is...

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

You are correct. Buying anything today that isn't 1080P is a significant mistake.
  35. ddrueding

    LCD failure rate? Spectre?

LCDs, as a technology, no longer count as new. I don't know of anyone still making CRTs at all. Spectre is a cheap brand, expect cheap quality. I buy either of the other brands you mention for that reason. I also make sure that it has dual inputs (DVI and VGA or 2xDVI).
  36. ddrueding

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

Agreed. If you are going to use a TV as a monitor, it must be at least 720P (1080P is ideal) and must have a digital input (DVI/HDMI). Anything else is going to suck.

Sweet! I have never compiled a kernel, or even looking into it. And the places I was reading said otherwise, but I believe you. I'm using a standard build of Ubuntu 8.04 x64, so I guess that support isn't included? I'll go read up on it. Thanks!
