    Mobo and CPU upgrade

Nope. The top-end chips don't have as much wiggle room as the low-end chips. The bin concept typically means that as a process matures, more and more chips are capable of premium speeds (and are therefore sold as lower speed to maintain supply), but it doesn't mean that there is more headroom...

    Mobo and CPU upgrade

I haven't run across a Q6600 that didn't go to 3Ghz with stock cooling and voltages yet. Really, it is 30 seconds in your BIOS. Considering it is also $50 less, I see no reason to do anything else.

I shot on a tripod; there is no way I could keep the exact shooting position while changing focus. When I'm on a tripod I shoot ISO100 because it is has (just a bit) less noise than ISO200, and I can't think of a reason not to. I wasn't actually looking at the tomato, I was looking at the frame...

It does. Nero Recode is pretty good. But it only gives you the option of converting to DVD or "Nero Digital". Not sure what format that is, but it sounds distinctly not open.

    Tips for encoding video DVDs

AutoGK handles a pretty wide range of incoming formats and gives a decent number of output options (final file size, quality, splitting) while keeping it all in a single GUI with a queue feature and logging support. There are other apps that can do it, but this ties all the other apps together...

    Tips for encoding video DVDs

Wow, that is a large file size for standard-def video. I would get the program Auto Gordian Knot (free) to get it into XviD or something else more compact. Even if you wanted virtually no quality loss, you should still be able to get it under 1GB/hour.

    Travelstar 7k320 ships(soon)$220?

After working with SSDs, I have no doubt that the primary hard drive of my next laptop will be one. So unless the laptop supports 2 internal drives, there will be an external along for the ride on photo trips (and which trips aren't photo trips ;)).

The primary reason for my trigger-happiness was a single bird and high wind. In order to get the shutter speed high enough I was shooting ISO400 and f5.6.
