I'm actually back to practical-land WRT vehicles...considering a Toyota Yaris and a Hyundai Genesis.

    Mobo and CPU upgrade

Gotcha, thanks e_dawg. I suspected as much, but I still haven't found any one-size-fits-all processing. If I were doing a shoot where I actually wanted lots of images as a result, I can see it being useful. As it stands, I mostly just pick the best example and work on it. If it could run the...

    Mobo and CPU upgrade

I'm glad I could amuse ;) But seriously, for batch processing a bunch of happy-snaps, I use Canon's Digital Photo Professional. For complex jobs with detail work I use PS CS3, for HDR screwing about I use Photomatix, and for massive stitching jobs I use PTGui. Is Lightroom better at any of these...

    Mobo and CPU upgrade

I decided to take a look at Lightroom 2. I pointed it at my photo collection, and after taking 30 minutes to look at them (not move, just look), it now takes several GB of RAM just sitting there. What does this program do again?

    Y is Monkey-C a mod? :)

Great, I was getting ready to complain about no posts in 17 hours, when I was relieved to see a post! When I read the post it is about the expectation that I will complain about no posts in 17 hours. Crap.

    US vs. Japan

I read somewhere that the weight savings put into the Tahoe Hybrid (in order to fit the motors and batteries) could have caused the efficiency increase on it's own. Instead, they but them in, just so they could make up for themselves. Stupid.

U.S. is still most obese country in the world

There are automated asset tracking tools, but they are difficult to modify if the facts don't agree with the...erm...reality of the situation. One of the things I get to do as IT Manager is document everything. Does anyone have a template that they like? A format? Does anyone see the need to include system specs for workstations? How about including every software license? How far is too far?

SSDs - State of the Product?

That is why this particular device taps directly into the PCI-E slot, bypassing the slower interfaces. They also aren't really selling with access time or STR in mind, but with number of IOPS available. I still don't think they will be getting anywhere that the commodity stuff won't very soon.
  19. ddrueding

SSDs - State of the Product?

I agree, but my point is that this technology will not be the super-high performance for long enough. The commodity storage is increasing in performance so quickly, that this will be overshadowed long before it is profitable. OT: Sweet, this is post #111111

SSDs - State of the Product?

Yep, I remember hearing about them about a year ago. They are going the wrong way, IMHO. Commodity storage will get really close really soon, and then they will have nothing.

Actually, my next car will have...300HP. Specifically because I make left turns (across traffic) on to and off of a 70MPH freeway at an uncontrolled intersection. That 300HP will be really nice for 0.1% of the time. Same as the quad-core when I first sit down and launch Photoshop, DPP...

    dSLR thread

I'm pretty sure I want the 100-400, as it is the longest zoom lens available and is said to perform well along the whole range. I'd imagine that it will be used mostly for wildlife photography. Naturally something faster and even longer would be nice, but everything faster that is even near...

I'm with Bozo on this. Even for the most mundane office uses you are asking your CPU to perform a series of tasks with long waiting periods in between. Everyone can use the extra power to complete those tasks faster, it's just a matter of knowing the experience can be better.

That is the hope. It seems imminent, and I'm hoping to have that be my second body. Having two different crop factors should give a smaller lens collection more variety. At the same time, my EF-S lenses will be less useful, and I'm looking for a new set that will take over where my 10-22 and...

    dSLR thread

It had about 4 layers, but the part that really slowed it down was the 32-bit per pixel thing. Once I got it down to 16-bit, it sped up dramatically. Assuming there is another one available. My complex doesn't have any CAT-3 or -5 wiring anymore, the only cable is coax, that means Comcast. They even offered a package deal with VoIP, but I'd rather give money to Vonage.
