    Multiple NICs On Mobos

I'd map two of them to a VM and run Smoothwall on that, then bond the other two for more bandwidth to the server.

Upgrading from XP to XP x64?

Not exactly normal desktop user. AutoCAD Civil with the Carlson extensions is pretty hardcore, especially once you start importing topos based on thousands of GPS readings. Each company only has one or two people that are qualified to do this stuff, so they can have a dozen jobs open at once.

Upgrading from XP to XP x64?

There are a couple of power users around here that could use more RAM, but they have a ridiculous amount of apps and special configs on their machines. Is there a way to upgrade without losing all the apps? I assume no, since the programs need to move from "Program Files" to "Program Files...

    nVidia may have "issues"

So nVidia said there wasn't a problem, then that there was a problem but it didn't affect Macs, then Apple said they were affected, then nVidia said that Macs had been affected, but that it was fixed, but that Apple should judge for itself. Right. nVidia is not the most trustworthy company at...

    Favorite Managed Switch?

Title says it all. I only need managed for basic reporting and 2 VLans, so nothing major. I need Gigabit and at least 48 ports per switch, and I'll be getting 2 or 3 of them. The cheapest non Linksys/Netgear is the 3Com 3CBLSG48. Thoughts?

Not illegal. My sister is a historian, working on her PhD. She has fellowships to do research at various universities and libraries around the country. She will need this permanently, so a loan from me won't work. Something smaller than an SLR would be beneficial.

Don't worry about the compact so much. When she says archive, think a basement under a library full of books. Lighting is poor, and the environment is very quiet and acoustically live. This camera will be used as a copy machine for documents that she can't touch, or at the very least remove from...

I'm helping my sister pick a camera for her needs: She wants to spend less than $200, and was looking at the Canon SD700 ELPH or the Fujifilm Finepix F50fd. Though other options will certainly be entertained. Thanks!

Best process to convert DVDs to video files

    "Win-printers" (the new Win-modems?)

We have an accounting program with a really out-dated back-end. Some reports need to be sent to a network printer directly from the unix/dos-based server. Apparently, the SAMSUNG CLP Series CLP-315W I recently purchased doesn't support that, even though it is PCL6 compliant. According to the...

Best process to convert DVDs to video files

I still use RipIt4Me as a front-end for DVDDecrypter, then I encode using AutoGK as a front-end for the various tools it needs to output XviD. It will preserve DD and DTS streams if you like, I convert to 5.1 MP3 with a target file size of 2GB per movie. That is plenty to not lose quality.
