With PS/2 inputs for sure no. USB could in theory pass stuff through memory on one of the devices. A memory stick left in the keyboard? I know some mice have a USB storage portion for drivers/profiles...

There isn't time of use, but there are usage tiers. The bottom level is <0.10 cents/kwh (even in the winter I never leave this tier anymore). The top level is >0.50 cents/kwh (previously 80%+ of my consumption was here). Yes, I use a lot of electricity.

The client knows that if the on-site backup and the off-site backup (5 miles away) fail, the RTO is 1 week. This is acceptable for them.

I'm now trying a significant backup from a Synology box onto Backblaze using the client written by Synology. Only about 3TB, but tens of millions of files. All over a slow (6Mbps if I'm lucky) connection. Jury is still (way) out. I'll give it a month and see what it looks like.

Not really, but at this point I am familiar enough with Synology products that going that route will simplify the deployment process and allow me to get to testing more quickly. The TS-831X has more bays, but the feature set seems similar.

Yup, just 20TB. Mostly running the storage for the 3 VMs that will be on a pair of ESXi machines using all the redundancy options, some basic file server stuff, and storage for the security cameras and call recording package. Only 5 concurrent users at that location, but they make ~$11M/year so...

Not the fastest, but good for testing. The smallest unit that ticks all the feature boxes I was looking for. I went with 4x 10GB to fit a normal SATA SSD because the NIC and M.2 couldn't fit at the same time. Shame about that.

When it is 40GB of raw storage ;) My current 8-drive array at home has less capacity, even after redundancy is subtracted out.

If it works as I expect it to the production environment will probably use vSAN.

Paid $406 each for 4x ST10000NM0016 - still waiting on one. Will be going into a Synology DS1517+ along with 16GB of RAM, X540T2, and a 1.2TB S3500. This will be to play with iSCSI hosting of ESXi VMs for vMotion and possibly HA along with normal fileserver duties.

Just ordered a stack of the 10TB Seagate Enterprise drives. We'll see how they do.

Agreed, more cores than needed for our kind of workflow, but it seems that the one with the most cores also has the highest clock. I'm still focused (as most users should be) on single-core performance, but that means the high-end chip anyway (unlike previous generations).

Reseating everything is a good call. My other guess would be temp related. Does the machine usually run all the time? It seems that every time it has been off for a while (to have service done) it works well for a while before acting up.

I don't need more than one body, and 20MP+ is enough. Full-frame would be nice for DoF, shutterless would make the multi-hour time-lapse sessions less guilt-ridden, silent photos create more options for the family shots. From what I've seen, the A9 is better low-light?

Yup. Processors simply aren't a thing that is moving significantly at the moment. Hopefully AMD will put up enough of a fight for Intel to step it up a notch. In general you are interested in the high-end desktop CPUs that are based on the server CPUs, rather than the mid-range desktop CPUs...

Indeed. Your current machine is close to current top-of-the-line machines. There is little for you to gain by upgrading your CPU. It might be best to focus on improving the storage subsystem, graphics card, or memory.

Thanks for the quick response. There are no buttons on the unit, and the volume rocker on the remote just brings up a dialog that wants to set up to control the TV volume.

Putting together a simple system for a client. The two inputs are AppleTV and Comcast. Comcast is 20dB louder than the AppleTV. I need a receiver that I can program this into, such that the two sources sound to be the same level when switching between them. I'd like the receiver to be <$500, but...

I have Pandora, Amazon Music, and Soundcloud for streaming. Audible for books on tape, and DoggCatcher for podcasts. Amazon is the one I use most, and have a nice collection of songs there. When I want to find something new I use Pandora. Some of the niche stuff is only on SoundCloud.

Nothing yet, but I'm adding devices slowly. So far my wife and I's main computers, the Amazon Fire, both Sonos, 3 Echos, 1 Nest, and the WiFi (new SSID/password) with just 2 cell phones. Base level of traffic is 15kbps up and 22kbps down. Entirely reasonable.

This is the first month my ISP has enabled a data cap. I've exceeded my 1TB allocation on day 8 of the billing cycle and already accrued another $30 of overage charges by day 11. For another $50/mo I can go unlimited. Seem prudent.

Howell might have it, other things to check would be any static routes on the workstation. If you can change the local IP/subnet on your router (and DHCP), I'd give that a go.
