    SSD in RAID

I've contemplated building with 40GB Intel SSDs to get affordable high performance I/O. I'd definitely not want to do that for a live business app unless I had a very good backup and recovery plan in place. Windows SoftRAID can be a PITA to resync in RAID5, but a degraded RAID5 on SSDs should...

    Cheap rack-mountable case

I think the thing to emphasize is that the Norco case is SOLID. It's a good bit of steel with tons of room for expansion and for that matter customization if need be. I can't argue with your pricing concerns, but I've bought them for as little as $80 shipped with rails, and at that price they're...

    Cheap rack-mountable case

The Norco cases are solid, generic enclosures if they're available locally. The one I like is an RP450 or something. They have a "bridge" center support that's designed to hold six 3.5" hard drives and they can be made silent fairly easily.

Never a tie. I only just taught myself to tie one a couple weeks ago, and that was just because I found one while I was cleaning my closet. I have some sport coats I put on a few times a year and that's about it. I did not think I could talk to another person for three minute with any degree...

    iPad: any experience?

He's fairly convinced that the issue is some kind of incompatibility between Apple devices and everything else. He knows he doesn't have issues with his notebooks. But he's not giving up the Apple stuff. He likes it too much. I sent him a link on updating the firmware on his stuff but I have no...

    Lenovo Thinkpads

The $329 warranty includes accidental damage coverage, not just defect issues. I'd think long and hard about whether it's worth 20% - 40% of the purchase price of the notebook, but it's also something they discount relatively frequently.

Since my friend in Wyoming is still recovering from the surgery she had back in December, I had to go to my comic book convention stag. As it happens, the convention had a Speed Dating event. I decided to participate and it was a lot of fun. I was the oldest person in the room, even older than...

    iPhone4 vs HTC Evo

I took 122 pictures at the comic convention I went to. Still only used half the battery on my Evo. I am impressed by that. I am also surprised by how well the image stabilization works. I only took four shakey pictures all day. I would say my phone is very credible for point and shoot photos.

Just a quick update on wireless weirdness: At my customer's insistence, I've tried three different firmware revisions on the Trendnet router and screwed around with the wireless encryption scheme, going from WPA2 to WPA to WEP to nothing. I also switched to channel 1 rather than 11. The icrap...

    FF4 and IE9

An insurance agency I support has software from one or other of the big insurers that absolutely won't run on anything else. Not IE7, not IE8 in compatibility mode, nor any other browser. That's pretty damned special right there.

Apple would be shooting itself in the foot if, every time a kid wanted an ithing, some beleaguered parent had to hop on Apple.com, set up an account and type in a credit card number.
