I've become quite addicted to this in Windows & with widescreens. Now that I'm doing the 3 monitor eyefinity thing, it isn't working so well. I would love to change the number of vertical spaces to 6, to recreate the effect of having 3 separate screens again. I've googled without luck. Thoughts?

We didn't end up going, but we would have gone to a local "urgent care" (eg. "doc in a box") and paid cash. Probably a hundred bucks or so. They are the equivalent of Fry's; so long as you go in knowing exactly what you want, you're in good shape. Just don't ask them to make a judgement call...

I've also seen it happen where someone gets a virus and it is able to steal their Outlook address book. It then picks one of the addresses on there as the sender and sends SPAM to the rest of the list. Your account may never have been compromised.

Great to see you back, Flagreen! I wish I knew someone who was competent at the controls. As it is, every mistake is a crash, and that becomes very time consuming in repairs. Very frustrating as well, which slows the rebuild, which slows the learning curve.

That would be it. Specifically the controller on the LSI RAID card; it was around 80C without direct airflow. It never crashed, but I like to treat my data better than that. At the moment, the only thing in the 80C range is the RAM, with the portion of the chipset furthest from the waterblock...

I had hesitated about the active adapters before, as I had issues with the first one I got. The new one seems to be working well, though (one day and counting, fingers crossed). That is a heck of a deal Coug, perhaps it is almost time to pull the trigger on that.

They shipped crossfire cables with the cards, and the cards still have the "fingers" on top for the connection, so I do have them cabled together. Even if they weren't, I would expect to see both cards in device manager (I'm not). That is what makes me think that this slot combination is...

Just tried out Eyefinity. Pretty cool, though the fact that all my monitors are different sizes hurts the effect. Even without the CrossFireX working, 5760x1080 is perfectly playable in Dirt2 and Portal with everything maxed.

Due to the Eyefinity Displayport limitation, I'm looking for ~40" LCDs that support Displayport in. Bonus points if it supports 120Hz, is LED, and costs around $1k. Thanks for any help!

Yup. Take a look at this one. The chipset heatsink covers the two 1x PCIe at the end, but all the full-size slots are still available.

Yes. All consumer-grade internet service is asymmetric; significantly more download than up. The two main reasons are that normal end-user stuff fits that profile and that download is much cheaper; the ISP can cache most of it locally.

On this one you don't lose a slot to the heatsink, it is next to slot one. This is the best board, but it is huge. You will have very few choices when it comes to cases, which is why I decided to go without.

Read about that on Slashdot about a week ago. They are trying to compete with AMD "Black" series processors (which are also unlocked). Of course, no guarantees what you can do with them (depending on yields), and 1156 doesn't support triple-channel RAM.

In that way you are correct about chipsets being inefficient; they don't have all the on idle power saving capabilities that CPUs do. If the system is idle most of the time, it is possible the chipset will produce more heat than the CPU.

Yup. Once I stick in the two 5870s, the OCZ Z-Drive, The X-Fi Forte 7.1, and the Intel Pro/1000PT dual-port, I'm out of slots ;) That was actually the deciding factor in not putting the system in a case, but mounting it to the wall instead.

Not really inefficient, but the cooling on most chipsets is inadequate IMHO. A modern CPU draws ~100W and has a giant heatsink with a large fan on it. The chipset has to disperse 20-40W and all it gets is a little heatsink that hopes to get some spare airflow from somewhere else? Some chipsets...

The CPU wasn't really the culprit; the motherboard chipset was running much hotter. My new motherboard (X58A-UD9) has even more chips to support the extra PCIe lanes, so there is more heat.

I actually did point that out. My point being that most videos don't have 1080P versions yet, and most users don't even know about the quality drop-down yet.

Depends on the airflow in your case. If you have significant airflow, no. If you have really low airflow and are overclocking/overvolting, yes. If you have no airflow at all and are overclocking/overvolting (like me) then you also need to use the built-in waterblock.

I don't understand what you mean when you say unsupported. VMWare will install ANY OS, even ones it has never heard of. It doesn't need to know anything about the OS for the fundamentals to work just fine. What steps are you taking when you get this error?
