Unsupported? I am unfamiliar with that error. Just build a generic VM if it doesn't let you specifically select Fedora. Be sure and give it enough free space ;)

    When to Build New System

    Were I to build a system at the moment, it would look like this: Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition Gulftown 3.33GHz Noctua NH-U12DX 1366 120mm SSO CPU Cooler GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD7 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Motherboard CORSAIR XMS3 12GB (6 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 OCZ Z-Drive R2 M84 PCI-E 512GB PCI Express...

    When to Build New System

Seems fine to me. Socket 1366 still has quite some life to it, you can have 6 cores if you like, and SSDs are quite happy at the moment with SATA6 and USB3 readily available.

Um, no. There is no hard limit on the amount of oil required at any time. It is relatively inelastic, but market forces are still plenty effective, especially over the long term. Just because we are unable to produce X barrels of oil a day does not cause the world to end. Stating that we had to...

Why I don't use Linux, or haven't....All I wanted to do was install Java on Firefox..

Yup. *nix is ready for server-side stuff, but they have a long way to go for the desktop.

    USB Fan

Very much so. It is an 80mm fan, so air volume isn't exceptional at quieter speeds, but it will get the job done and is very easy to use/transport.

    USB Fan

I have several of these which have a retractable cord, variable speed, and a nice stand. I also have some of these, which are 120mm, but not silent, and are awkward without a stand.

That does make sense, but isn't having it in it's own directory separate enough? What extra do you get having it on a separate partition? Different filesystems? Redundancy?

End of the World As We Know It

Sorry, not that out in the middle of nowhere. Just far enough to not have to see or hear anybody from the house. The hills I'm looking at now are about 200 acres in size and 500 feet tall, surrounded by protected grazing land. The whole thing is about 5 miles from the nearest store and 15 miles...

End of the World As We Know It

I plan on building a house on the top of a completely uninhabited hill miles from anywhere, as self-sufficient as possible, as soon as practical. Within 20 years would be great. You are right that living in cities is cheaper once all costs are accounted for, but (IMHO) at a significant loss of...

We are indeed all screwed. Bounce today, amazing crash tomorrow. Even more amazing crash next week, and next month. Some resistance at every imaginary boundary, but not that much. Every time my wife asks when I'll move our savings out of cash and back into the market, my response is "not yet".

    Display timewarp

That is weird. :p The way to combat widescreen uselessness is to put all your menus, toolbars, and tabs on the sides; maximizing vertical space for content.
  32. ddrueding

    Display timewarp

Two is enough in most cases. And if it isn't that important, just get a single and take it vertical. My home machine is like that all the time.

    Watercooling

At one point I read quite a bit about them, but have forgotten most of it. My CPU is currently drawing under 150W, so a 223W peltier could do a decent number on it. I have that much headroom in my existing power supply ;)

I think Sol has this one nailed. Most people are perfectly happy with 1080. If you want more, you can get it for a price.
  42. ddrueding

    Watercooling

Indeed, but I might get another 200MHz out of it, and that just isn't worthwhile. On air, my system was quiet at 3.4GHz, and loud at 4GHz. Now it is silent at 4GHz. I'll just take the win ;)
  43. ddrueding

    Fast Wiping

No idea. I just do an in-camera format. I know that wouldn't prevent data recovery using software, but I don't see that being a problem. Are you actually considering selling something? ;)

Everything is doing great except the RAM. When fully loaded it exceeds 75C. Not sure what exactly I'll be doing about this; all 6 closely spaced slots are populated. Koolance does offer a solution, still thinking about it.

It feels good to be typing on my own computer again, it was down since the last leak until the latest batch of parts arrived. This time it is looking much better (images on my Flickr account - in situ, closeup). Once I get that custom wiring harness, it will be finished!

    Hybrid Drive

Control would be difficult to set up, and few would be capable of managing it usefully. Write caching would be very useful, even if it was only the 4GB.

4GB will get you quite a ways if it is used efficiently. I do think it is just a company that is poorly positioned in the SSD market trying to remain relevant.
