    UBUNTU AND DVD/CD SOFTWARE VS....?

Most Linux based ripping software is based on cdda2wav/cdparanoia and LAME. I've found the cdparanoia and lame combination to be very good, and on the same level as EAC. I personally use GRIP (but encode as FLAC rather than mp3), and haven't had any problems with it.

    More Vista nonsense

The memory leak is related to 3rd party apps opening streams to the extended attributes of files and then linking to those said stream via OLE. Since only a very small number of applications even know about the extended attribute streams, it's unlikely to impact the majority of users in...

Dual, quad core and winXP pro

The decent video card would be for the same reason you would get a high performance gfx card for either Linux/BSD/Mac OS X, gaming. Over the past few years I've grown to dislike the Linux scene, in particular how a lot of the distro's are slapped together. RH, SUSE, etc all have their own...

That's simply because of the clock speed advantage of the Intel cores... Even though my next significant upgrade isn't for 16-18months, I'm starting to keep an eye on the current happenings... The landscape as it is, IMO is quite dull. AMD just released their Quad core, which even though...

How to access USB Tape Drives on Windows?

I don't mean to be rude, but do you have access to MSDN/Technet? It's all in there... If you do have a MSDN subscription, ASK MICROSOFT. That is what you are paying for. \\.\Tape%d is the filename to access the media, and \\.\btiausb (or as appropriate for your device) is the filename to access...

How to access USB Tape Drives on Windows?

Windows enumerates all tape drives the same way irrespective of the interface, eg SCSI, IDE, USB, etc. Just connect to the drive via the HAL and you'd be fine, (Just send the SCSI command to report capabilities before issuing other commands, then the normal RST, INIT commands for your device)...

Time, thanks for the suggestion. I'll see if I can find any cards with the NV44A GPU... (and not the NV44 + HSI). It seems to be the best solution, given current supply issues with AGP cards. However, it'll be a toss up between performance...

    Geforce FX5500

Hi Mark, I've seriously thought about it... But to do a straight motherboard swap (to go from AGP to PCIe), without swapping other parts, would be in the AU$500 mark just for the motherboard, if I could find one. (Tyan K8W to Tyan K8WE). I guess that what happens when one deals with dual socket...

    Linux Certifications?

Learn vi, as it's the only editor that will exist on any *nix system you touch. Then again, 'cat' can be quite handy if you need to add a quick few lines to a file. On FreeBSD, try 'ee' aka Easy Editor, but on most Linux systems, you'll either have 'nano' or 'pico'. As for a MTA, sendmail is...

    Poll: Anyone like to cook?

I generally cheat with Sweet and Sour Pork, and use a pre-bottled mix from Kan-Tong. However one trick is to use Pork Spare Ribs, and leave the fat on. If you use a lean pork fillet, the pork tends to dry out too much.

    Maxtor Drives Still??

AFAIK, Seagate is keeping the Maxtor name around for a little while, simply for marketing reasons. I believe current Maxtors are still Maxtors, since a large stockpile would exist, however in 6-12months, most of those should be sold, or being kept for warranty purposes.
