    M$ Office SP3 Planned Obsolence

You might be surprised, I still have Word for Windows v2.0 docs about from my final year at school... However I could live without them, but most companies will feel it. Here is Australia, taxation documents must be kept for 7 years minimum, anything related to pharmaceutical is 10+ years or...

    M$ Office SP3 Planned Obsolence

From what I understand, it's Word 95/97 and lower, and other suites like Word-Perfect, Works, etc. MS seems to get more clueless in regards to customers and their requirements each day, instead feeding their own agenda...

    More Vista nonsense

For your information, the Courier Mail Newspaper here is Brisbane has listed Vista as the number 1 NOT to buy Technology product of 2007, followed by the Apple TV (in number 2) and Telstra's NextG (cellphone) network in 3rd position. (Telstra has had to extend legacy CDMA coverage for at least...

    More Vista nonsense

Not surprising, considering the hype surrounding the release of Vista; Bigger, Newer, Better, etc... And what did we get? An OS with so much bloat in the UI, added DRM at ever layer, a crippled sound-system (aka no/little hardware acceleration), WGA overblown, the Allow/Cancel pop-up, missing...

    Defrag outlook pst file

Why don't you use NT4.0 defrag method? Copy the PST file off the HDD onto something else, eg USB Key or network share, delete/rename said original file, reboot, and then copy the original file back... Your PST should now be defragged...

    Segatae Filaure

Whilst it's never happened to me personally (I've always got back what I sent), a friend sent in 3x 120GB drives and got back 3x200GB drives (this was back when 250GB was the biggest you could get). Even I was surprised when it happened.

Firewire 3.2kbps soon- too late, too sorry?

Firewire still has it's place especially with Camcorders and external HDDs. USB simply can not (by specification) offer true sustained transfer rates, unlike Firewire. It's a pity most common desktop users never see the true benefit of Firewire over USB.

    Video Capture Card & SW?

I've played with SkyView DVR/CCTV stuff before, and all the mid-range and up offer both Windows Application and Web based access to the footage, as well as time based recording, time lapse, motion sense recording, etc. You just need the storage space for the footage, (all the ones I've used just...

    Dual Boot Imaging Woes

Hi Merc, I think your problem lays with wanting to dual boot, and Vista's new boot manager. (Vista doesn't use ntldr.exe anymore). One option... 1. create a Vista image that resides on a primary partition. 2. create a WinXP image that also resides on a primary partition. (You have two...

    SCSI Wizard needed!

Don't forget to enable "Hook int19" (or sometimes it's called "Hook 13h"). INT13h is used by the BIOS to detect and work with available drives. If you disable hooking of int13h, SCSI cards are not able to install their BIOS, and thus won't work.

    AD migration questions

Agree 100%. The worst thing is, if something goes wrong, there's never an easy way to fix it. The easiest way for me to remember what AD is, is simply a LDAP server with built-in kerboras authentication. (Yep, that's all AD is, except the LDAP server has a pre-defined schema).

MS Exchange + Broken RPC Service

Are you using exmerge? IIRC there is a setting that drops its connections down to 1 at a time, which should reduce the load. (Exmerge exports the mailbox to PST and reimports said PST to the same named account - and doesn't need matching SID's, which is great for domain rebuilds or migrating...

    AD migration questions

Oh come on, EXCH and AD aren't that bad. Sure when something goes wrong, there's never an easy fix, and admittedly there are better solutions out there, but AD and EXCH do work well for a lot of organisations. I know I could build a more robust system using NIS+/LDAP and a MTA like postfix...

Nope, you need 3rd party software as you've just linked to. You can setup all the power modes you like, but you must manually switch between the modes for them to come into effect... (You can only set what the power/sleep and lid close do based on your power source).
