    Why do inkjet heads clog?

Only the very well heeled should contemplate a color laser. If you use it to print any volume of pictures or graphics (which is the most likely application), running costs are not necessarily that much better than an inkjet. On the other hand, they obviously work far better with laser/copy...

    Why do inkjet heads clog?

This is the sort of response I was hoping for. Firstly, I want to make it clear that I think that all inkjet manufacturers are pirates, and I'll single out Epson for going from not too bad to sometimes bloody awful in their printing costs. The separate ink refills for the C70/80, for example...

    Why do inkjet heads clog?

It's important to remember that different manufacturers use quite different techniques for depositing the ink onto the paper. In particular, there is Canon's 'bubble-jet' system where the ink is heated, and Epson's microscopic piezo impellers. Consequently, the ink formulations are radically...

Anybody using a KVM switch? Feedback wanted

Good grief! My buy price for that Linksys KVM (with cables) is nearly US$70, excluding tax! So normal retail would probably be AU$160 including tax. I thought they were overpriced here, but that really brings it home.

Dog poo lands robber 10-year jail term

I don't mean to endlessly regurgitate news here, but this has got to be one of the offbeat stories of the year. http://abc.net.au/news/2002/09/item20020919182421_1.htm

That would depend on the size of the print. I wouldn't be surprised if they could knock out 6x4s cheaper, but no chance with 8x10.

    What's a good photo printer?

And what general purpose inkjets really can print photos? There is the 6-color photo printer range from Epson and the option exists for some Canon printers. My reading is that HP equivalents are running third by some margin at present. Plus there's the issue of wild horses and selling HP...

    Good web-based email: myrealbox

Well, I can't yet comment on how good it is, but I signed my ten year old up with OperaMail recently when she demanded an email account. HotMail was out of the question; Yahoo now demands a credit card for "authentication"; so OperaMail (masquerading as an 18 year old) it was. No spam so far...

    Northwest US rendezvous!?

Here in Brisbane, Summer usually lasts from September through May. Autumn is June to July, then we have a brief Spring in August. Instead of Winter, we get a special season called 'purgatory', that lasts from about December to February. It's roughest on the plants. They never know when it's...

    Barracuda 5 SATA review

Based on the dramatically skewed results, I reckon it's gotta be 8MB cache. I'm not surprised that SATA performance is acceptable, but I don't think you can draw any other conclusions from those tests. However, I can't resist a premature gloat about the access time. Here, only two people...

CrazyBrowser - IE fans, you guys have to try this

It must be interesting to live in a dreamworld. Is the sky pink or green? IE 3.0 was absolutely god-awful rubbish. IE 4.0 was crash-prone buggy software. It was only with IE 5+ that M$ could finally be taken seriously. Okay, maybe "seriously" isn't exactly the right word. How about "finally...

No, credit where's it due. Mercutio was the first with the link to www.litepc.com (the home of IEradicator). In fact, I had already downloaded IEradicator before anyone else posted. But thanks to Groltz and Cliptin for giving me enough confidence to use it. :)

Well, thanks again for all the suggestions, but bonus points go to Mercutio for being the first to suggest IEradicator. Best Used Laptop

Hmmm, over here anyway, I would have said that anecdotally Gateway was the most unreliable brand (anyone else from Oz had similar experience?) Considering they're often coming out of the same factories, that's an interesting opinion. I guess you could be right, but which aspects in particular...

Is this Dell worth the money?

Well, the 106 slot load costs more than the tray load equivalent, and I think they're very smooth. The main problem is that here at least they cost quite a lot more than a generic DVD drive. I believe that they improve customer satisfaction, provided their budget extends that far.

Is this Dell worth the money?

I think you had a touch of bargainhunteritis there, Doug. I'm glad to see that you've recovered. Value for money should not be an important purchasing criteria, but I've noticed a few people here focusing on it to the exclusion of all else. If you were buying and selling stuff like...

    Western Digital - Warranty Change?

    Western Digital - Warranty Change?

Horse's arse. The SR benchmarks show the Barracuda IV neck and neck with the Maxtor 740, and the legacy tests show it ahead. Only the server tests show it dominating, if you can call 10% dominating. Over here at least, Maxtor is more expensive (or certainly no cheaper). Tannin has never...

    Disabling Internet Explorer

What's a good (easy) way to disable IE5.5/6 in Win98? A client wants to restrict web access but permit email access for a particular employee, as well as solitaire et al. Apparently the employee has been unable to surf and play in moderation, so her employer wants her to go cold turkey. I...

    Movie Reviews

In response to Bill's inquiry, the above piece was written by my daughter.
