    PC Customers 101…..Know thine enemy!

Wonderful thread, Vlad. You forgot to mention that many executives fall into the type 2 (ii) category. As do all partners in accounting firms (something to remember if you read this, James). I can't see my chief nemesis here, so I'd like to introduce: Type 9: The Whiner Whiners are either...

    Interesting SPEC comparison

Computer leases are a mug's game, yet there seems to be no shortage of punters eager to boost financial institution profits. Leases only really make sense where the goods retain some sort of value over a lengthy period. Clearly, that is not the case with computer hardware (or even more...

How Did You Stumble Across The [S]torage [R]eview Website ?

Ah yes, Anandtech, exactly so. I was struggling to remember. I started visiting it in 1998, but didn't bother with the forums. I honestly can't remember the first time I lurked there, but it was only early last year that I had a change of attitude and started posting.

Thanks for that correction. I'm now confused over whether or not its Richard's or Dave's album that impressed me all those years ago! I'll admit that I knew that, but wanted to see if you did. :) We always pronounced it 'quit', so when they changed the name we called it like it's written...

    The Who bass player dead

By sheer coincidence, I stumbled across that specific concert on cable the other night. Paul Weller was pretty average, Noel Gallagher wasn't bad but looked surprised to be there, Bryan Adams was exactly the same as always, but the standout for me (at least in the part of the concert I saw) was...

If you use Opera (I think IE has something similar, but Mozilla doesn't), you can zoom the display up by 300-400%. Windows RG is an oldie but a goodie. I couldn't help but try out everything again. ;) Great satire. :)

In that case, settle for a K6-2. They are a lot easier to find. The + version is like hen's teeth, however, intended as Cas says solely for mobile use. The vast majority of Celeron 300As would be on ATX motherboards rather than AT.

Well, the lyrics were usually easier to understand with Bon Scott. But does anyone listen to AC/DC's lyrics these days anyway? My understanding is that Bon wrote the lyrics when he was with the band, and apart from his last album, they're pretty good considering the genre. The AccaDacca lyrics...

I'm sorry I mentioned the commas. I don't think there's anything much wrong technically with the grammar. But are you saying you could really comprehend what she was saying? That every part of each sentence actually made sense? :o I was hoping this would encourage others to post...

It was a dark and stormy night

I'd like to share this piece of writing with you. Amongst its many outstanding qualities, the tribute to commas that this single sentence embodies must be singled out for special commendation. Enjoy. And this: From 'The Divided Heart', by Eileen Sherman. They're best if read out loud, but...

    Pocket Tank

Ha! You had it easy! Apart from an HP calculator that could hold a 50 line program, my first computer was based on a National Semiconductor SC/MP. From memory, it had a 1kB ROM BIOS and 256 bytes of RAM. I built it at the end of 1976, based on an NS SC/MP 'intro kit', I think. Although not the...

    Need Recommendation For A UPS

As a rule of thumb, you want a minimum of 300VA for a workstation (although your current config is well under this), up to about 450VA for a duallie with twin hard drives and a 19" CRT monitor. Depending on brand and model, this should give you a run time of about 3 to 4 minutes. Halving the...

Does anyone think that "those poxy get-in-the-road-all-the-time Windows keys" were worth adding to keyboards all over the world? It won't surprise Tony to learn that I still use a 12 year old Honeywell 101WN keyboard. I conceded some time ago that new keyboards would come with WindBlows keys...

    Multiprocessing and Multitasking

I tried with Opera on an Athlon 1000. Moving side to size fairly rapidly I couldn't get above 15%, but I managed to hit about 25% by moving up and down "member services" as fast as I could (two or three complete passes up and down a second). The same operation on a P450 got me above 60%. Whoa...

[Alt][Space], then [S] for size or [M] for move. To add to the list, [Alt][Enter] brings up properties of a selected object (where supported). And I don't think I saw anyone mention that [Ctrl][Tab] switches between MDI document windows.

Delta 37cfm 6800rpm fan requires 3.5W. The Zalman Fan Mate is rated for use with fans up to 6W. AU$12 isn't cheap? :o You do realize it contains a transistor-based voltage regulator, don't you? It's not a rheostat.

ESS sound cards. 10 bucks and they work in 2000

Sums it up beautifully. For making attention getting noises or playing CDs, they were quite satisfactory. Australia's Dilemma

Firstly Tea, I agree in principle with much of what you say in your response to James. But I think you give too much credit to Ruddock and his minions. What do we all look like

I'd be interested to hear what Cas has to say about this. He has previously disparaged BEOS as offering no advantage over NT, yet I am under the impression that it was rather good at load balancing, and supposedly the API encouraged all apps to be multithreaded. Cas, is the problem solely down...

    Australia's Dilemma

I'm afraid I agree with James. We're being misled by a morally corrupt government and complicit media (who are only interested in sensationalism, not truth). Email and networking issues

Hypothetical example: the cable is routed through the roof cavity and you want to run it down inside an internal wall to a socket about 30cm above the floor. For this you need a noggin drill, which is a drill with a bit about 120cm long. Cable installers don't carry this kind of gear. Plus...
