Was this a security hole they exploited?

Another M$ weakness. That's unusual! *yawn* http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/answerstips/story/0,24330,3374542,00.html My broadband ISP has already blocked NetBIOS (because of other exploits), and naturally I have a firewall. And a port blocker. Thanks for drawing attention to this...

    Windows X·P Service Pack ---> 1 <--- Available

They're on dangerous ground. IIRC Tweaktown is an Oz site, and we now have our own equivalent to the DMCA, meaning the key changer is illegal. I'd expect M$ to act against that.

    Pitch drop experiment

I don't know about that. There is relatively little gravitational effect in an orbiting satellite. So even a normal liquid would flow extremely slowly without something to start it off. My impression is that glass is a liquid with a structure too strong to flow at room temperature under normal...

    Dell Warranty...worth it?

There are times when you really don't want to use font scaling. Unless you want to give yourself eyestrain, 133dpi makes it compulsory. It's a problem with applications that don't scale at all, and ones with complex forms such as database applications. As for visible pixels, I thought sub-pixel...

TYAN Tiger MPX S2466-4M, problem with BIOS rev. 4.03?

Eeeek! Don't misunderstand me, I loathe and detest cheap cases. I was just trying to keep CougTek on a pragmatic path. :( All things considered, perhaps it would be best to try to shoot for a whole new case and PS? Or maybe Coug should leave it as is with the qualification that it doesn't...

TYAN Tiger MPX S2466-4M, problem with BIOS rev. 4.03?

Coug, stay calm. This definitely calls for major diplomacy. But the situation should be salvageable, nonetheless. You could really do with advice from Tony here. I'm certain he would be able to guide you through to a far more satisfactory state of affairs. Remember, the customer insisted on...

Maxtor Reduces Warranty to 1 Year

Quantum was down to one year well before they were swallowed by Maxtor, in Australia at least. That didn't seem to affect other manufacturers' policy then, although obviously Maxtor today has a much bigger slice of the market.

    Tape Backup Solutions

I just checked, and it actually defaults to Quick (TOC) erase, with the option of full format. Took less than a minute to erase the 2x4x disc I just tried. The first time you use a blank disc with the program, it will insist on doing a full format. But from then on it will use quick erase...

    Dell Warranty...worth it?

If you fully intend keeping it for three years, definitely get the warranty. Although what you really want is an insurance policy that guards against accidental damage. :( There are just so many ways to write off a laptop, but hardly any are covered under warranty. My own opinion is that you...

    Pitch drop experiment

I've actually seen it in the flesh, as it were. :) It used to be in an entrance to one of the buildings, so you could press your nose to the glass and goggle if you wished. It makes the prof's point very effectively, Bill. If someone told you that everyday materials that we take for granted...

I've found at least some 2x4x RW media to be highly unreliable. I have been told that 10x12x is better (with newer drives obviously), but I have no evidence. NTI's FileCD, their packet writing software, definitely has a quick format option (only applicable after you've done a full format, or...

    Download manager

In practice, I've found Opera's inbuilt download manager as effective as anything else. I phoned the Big Pong 1800 number in my user guide and found it was disconnected. So I threw the booklet somewhere in disgust, and hunted around their website (using another ISP) to get the support number. My first call was answered with a loud distorted noise. I got further with the second...

    Nero sucks

A longshot, Tea, but have you tried replacing the ASPI drivers? I didn't have much fun with my last Nero install either. It was the latest version bar one, and bundled with a Lite-On drive, so one would expect it to recognize the drive successfully. It insisted it was a 32-spin drive (it's...

No, I was right. This MacSkeptic column finds FireWire still has a slight advantage. If you want ATAPI and cost is an issue, you are probably looking at Travan 4. Capacity is 4GB uncompressed (8GB compressed). But why don't you consider DVD-RW instead? You should be able to sell the Pioneer A04 for under US$500, and the 4.7GB (uncompressed) RW media is cheap.
