    10 Year Anniversary for StorageForum

I'm pretty sure the forum started on January 13th 2002. Doug and his test user MonkeyC were born on the 13th and the 14th IIRC. I think Clocker logged in the 15th and he was one of the very first, if not the first to register.

    Advanced formating on WD10EALX?

It's not. Windows XP was snappy on it and I didn't have to move the first sector. Chewy was right.

    Decent USB Flash Drives

The speed you wrote is for the 16GB model. The 8GB reads at up to 53MBps and writes at up to 15MBps. It's very good for the asked price anyway.

    Advanced formating on WD10EALX?

Yes, but I would rather not have to realign the drive. Because when she will change to Windows 7, I'll certainly forget that I realigned the first sector and I won't think about restoring it to its original state. It's just too much trouble.

Moumoune = wimp, weakling. It's only used by French-speaking people here. I don't think a French from France would understand the meaning. I was just poking at Mamooschka's son-in-law.

    Advanced formating on WD10EALX?

Anyone knows if the Western Digital WD10EALX (1TB, SATA 6Gbps) has the advanced formating or the older 512KB sectors? I have to build a new computer with Windows XP on it and it's the only drive I have in stock. Speed will suck if it has the new sector size.

    6 SSD test

Larger SSDs perform better because they can access more flash memory chips simultaneously. Unless you want to order flash chips yourself, grab your soldering iron and reflash the controller's firmware, you won't get larger drive performance from a smaller drive.

    New business machine baseline

Or show them the study that measured the airborn particles rejected by old HP laser printers that were equivalent to sitting next to a heavy smoker. Newer laser printers are much better for the health of people working next to them.

    New business machine baseline

Don't blame the industry for moving on if you painted yourself in a corner. You've known for years that parallel ports are vanishing. No matter how good the old HP LaserJet 3 printers were, stop pushing them if you know you won't be able to plug them to PCs you'll sell tomorrow.

    New business machine baseline

Done with the parallel and the PS/2 ports. Computers are designed to last for five years and both these standards have been obsolete for way longer than that. I tell my customers it's time to move on. Windows 7 often don't support anything plug in a parallel port anyway (manufacturers can't...

Isn't that the expected result? You re-flashing the BIOS, how can it retain the old settings? Every time I've flashed a BIOS, this is what happened. Not just on Asus, but GigaByte and MSI too.

I think Hibachi's are the safe choice for RAID anything. Even though they are not explicitly certified for it, they seem to be those working best in such configurations. Otherwise, if you absolutely want RAID-certified drives, be ready to throw out a big chunk of green bills. Seagate's...

    USB 3.0 Cases

You would be surprised how much power a low profile graphic card could use. What's the clearance for the CPU cooler? I'm thinking about using a Thermalright AXP-140 (70.2mm height) with a low-profile 120mm fan (12mm height) inside that case and I'd like to know if I'm dreaming in colors. I'll...

    USB 3.0 Cases

Do you install additional 80mm fans on the side, or you leave it as-is? Personally, I wouldn't put additonal fans for a low-end build, but anything with a 95W or more processor, I would install two 80mm (low speed) right aside the CPU.

    problem Computer Rebuild

I've never seen an Asus board where you cannot set the primary graphic source from onboard or PCI-E source and I've seen quite a few. Unless the board came from an OEM box. Even their ultra low-end, 50$ boards have that setting.

None of the heatsinks I mentioned would fit inside the NSK2480. Sol's AXP-140 would, but it's an expensive piece. A cheaper alternative would be the Scythe Big Shuriken, while the most effective heatsink you could use would be the Noctua NH-C14, with only the bottom fan installed. Other...

There's a comparison of the Noctua and Prolimatech fans on this page. As you can see, at equivalent noise level, the Prolimatech cools better than the Noctua. So no, I wouldn't pay more for the Noctua. In fact, I wouldn't pay for it even if it cost the same as the Prolimatech. From the page...

The best 140mm I've seen, according to the many reviews I've read, seems to be the Prolimatech Blue Vortex 14. It's quieter, for the same generated airflow, than either the Thermalright or Noctua 14cm fans. It's inexpensive too. You can get it from SVC for ~10$. I think that store is not too...
