    Netbook for the wife

I don't believe BD will ever take over as the dominant media format. In fact, I suspect that optical drives will be considered antique oddities in as little as 5 years. For small to medium stuff, the overwhelming trend is to downloads. For bigger stuff, flash makes optical discs look...

Not sure I've done anything yet - you seem to be on the right track. Just don't get bamboozled with the fancy stuff that some people like to throw around, and also remember that a lot of web examples are very old and have been superseded by later versions of Oracle. I'm actually struggling...

    Oracle table size statistics

Sorry, I've never used the RBO, I was just trying to be complete. According to OraFAQ: "Rule Based Optimizer is not supported in Oracle 10g and above releases". So forget about it. I have no idea what those two guys in your thread were on about, the most up to date statistics will...

    Oracle table size statistics

Some of the techniques seem unnecessarily sophisticated for what you want - or for anything, in fact. And please ignore the warnings about updating statistics, it's extremely unlikely your instance isn't set up to use the Cost Based Optimizer, the alternative (Rule Based) came out of The Ark...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

Apparently, the Vizio XVT series use IPS panels. If so, no wonder Greg's knocked out with his. Unfortunately, Vizio isn't available in this part of the world. And just to horrify you, even the LG that Fushigi linked to sells for about US$850 here ... Pradeep, why would anyone using a TV as a...

    RIP Anabelle

Fushigi's post could have been mine - we even have the same keyboard - except for the fact that it does have an Insert key! It's the half-height immediately above the Del key. You can see it in the NewEgg photo. I'm looking forward to Fushigi's explanation ... :)

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

What TVs would people not recommend as a monitor? For office use, I'm thinking that you don't need 120Hz, and I'm even wondering if 1366x768 would suffice for someone with vision problems. Are some units too bright, for instance?

Gabriel is almost always a boys name. It looks like it was a fringe girl's name in the US for several years (just inside the top 1000), but faded after the turn of the century. Apparently, there are 20825 Gabrielle, 6125 Gabriele, 2450 Gabriella and 22050 Gabriela females in the US (total...

Eneloop Alternatives (or Cracking The Battery Lingo Codewords)

Lunar, just check the thread title ... They're good in that they're Sanyo, but then so are perhaps 50% of batteries in that class (made up, can't remember market share and don't care). Many Sanyos are rebranded as, eg Eveready. Bottom line, they do not have the characteristics of Eneloops et al.
  13. T

Eneloop Alternatives (or Cracking The Battery Lingo Codewords)

No, they're not! The claims that Thomas Distributing make about them are not from Sanyo - it's either a typo or more BS from TD. Sanyo has been using "Superlattice Alloy Technology" since 2004. It enables higher capacity and discharge rates (so presumably it results in lower impedance).

    Wifi router reccomendations?

The pictures were for general interest, BTW. The fact remains that even that entry-level DrayTek is nearly US$200, and the feature set just isn't what most home users need. Adcadet, given that both your PCs are gigabit-enabled, I'd have to second Handruin's suggestion of the D-Link DIR-655. It...

    Wifi router reccomendations?

You mean like this? Because the DrayTek functions as a VPN endpoint (host), you obviously need to disable that as well if you want to forward. You're probably right that most routers now include some form of SPI and DoS protection, at least ones that aren't bargain basement anyway. What...

    Wifi router reccomendations?

Hmmm, I guess it depends on the device. Vigor 2100n is the baby of the DrayTek family, but it still provides Stateful Packet Inspection and DoS protection. And a whole heap of other stuff that's probably more suited to a small business rather than a home user, but it's nice to have the option in...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

It's surprising how one thing leads to another just by surfing the web, or in this case, Storage Forum. After Greg's success, I noticed this Panasonic 32" motion-processing IPS TV for < US$950. Did you notice the IPS-Alpha bit? And yes, there's also a 37" version. Of course, TV prices in Oz...

Thanks Maxburn, I didn't realize they still operated FTP servers; there's no mention of it on their website. For the past few hours, I've been attempting to download drivers from Asus. I average maybe 1.5kB/s and tend to give up. I've also tried their "P2P" option, which went as low as 250 bytes per second (!) before ultimately timing out. I must have experienced even shittier service from other...

    A Disk Read Error Occurred

Sorry, self-inflicted wound (sort of). I had changed the cluster size on the first partition and forgot all about it. Apparently, WinXP install can't handle that and quietly corrupted something. Cheap 11"x17" copier

Wrong model. The MFC6490CW scans A3/11x17 for US$300. Being a large format inkjet, it's apparently pretty slow, if that's an issue. The Kyocera/CopyStar obviously sounds more like what you were looking for. Good pickup from Stereodude.

SAN is always slower - that should be obvious. Anyone who says otherwise is not to be trusted. Decent SAN controllers use big caches to try to ameliorate this. However, this only offsets latency in the disk subsystem, which would be very considerably less with SSDs anyway. What Pradeep is...

    Wiring a house for LED

Yes, there are square recessed commercial fixtures (shorter tubes) that can look highly attractive, but I doubt you could mount them in a domestic situation. Nonetheless, all these are off-the-shelf solutions and preferable for an investment like a house, i.e. don't frighten future buyers...

    Wiring a house for LED

You can dim T5s you know, you just need (expensive) dimmable ballasts. It's well worth considering this anyway. But yeah, the more sources you have, the more likely the result will be aesthetically pleasing. So indirect is always the ultimate - and that's best achieved with fluorescent. Just a...

    Wiring a house for LED

I was thinking that as well, except that multi-tube fixtures would be way too bright - unless he has a 12' ceiling. You only need 6 T5 tubes to deliver 16000 lumens, they're seriously bright - especially if you use high-efficiency reflector fixtures. If you arranged them in pairs (end-to-end...

    Laptop for home use.

Frankly, I would have paid extra for the Lenovo - their support just makes HP look like the scam artists they are. As a reseller, you wouldn't experience the absolute crap that end users have to go through. For example, be thankful your laptop doesn't have faulty Nvidia graphics, because HP...

    Cheap Color Laser Printer

    Netbook for the wife

Based on Chewy's test, sounds like your users have problem batteries or charging circuits. OTOH, the Acer 3-cell we have here wouldn't make it to 2 hours if I did what Chewy did. This review got 1:56 from the HP Mini 1000 running 'Battery Eater'. I didn't think there was any significant...

The HP2140 uses 11V batteries, so the cells are clustered in groups of three. Your examples have either a 3-cell or 6-cell battery. Netbook for the wife

You're being ridiculous. Youtube is hardly HD! IMO, a significant drawback of getting an HP is Windows 7. That is more likely to tax the Atom + 2GB platform. Will, a number of people have recommended an MSI Wind U100/120/123 or equivalent. I think you'll find they're cheaper than the HP. If...

    Cheap Color Laser Printer

For what exactly? Most bloated drivers, worst support for different OS, most appalling customer service? How about slowest printing? Warmed up, the first black page takes at least 24 seconds. Printers: Fast 1-page documents

Canon makes a lightweight (6kg) printer (LBP3250) that also claims 6 seconds, but it doesn't appear on the Canon US website. The LBP3310 is rather less lightweight (11kg), manages 6.5 seconds, and also isn't on the US website. I steeled myself and checked HP, and came up with a best of 9...

    Printers: Fast 1-page documents

I'm sure there are heaps of others, but ... I recently mothballed my Samsung color laser in favour of our old Kyocera B&W laser. Couldn't help but notice how much faster printing the first page is. So I'd recommend the Kyocera FS-1100. The specs claim 6 seconds for the first page (if you turn...
