Opinions Wanted - System for my Dad

Yes, given that many powered USB devices are borderline or already exceed the USB 2.0 spec, any increase there will be welcomed with open arms. From the PC Authority review: with the USB 3 connection enabled the drive’s performance was more than twice that of USB 2 in our multifile (3,000 files...

Opinions Wanted - System for my Dad

2GB is adequate right now with light-weight 32-bit apps, but 4GB would be a better hedge for 64-bit, particularly with integrated graphics stealing some of it. DDR3 is preferable for ease of future expansion. It's surprisingly good and comes with DVI and HDMI support. No bandwidth, so games...

    Presenting "The Coffin"

Dave, I really admire your engineering instincts and have to admit that you've made your equipment more secure than probably anyone else here; I really can't see a burglar making off with a 7' x 18" x 9" coffin. But you have to understand that you're completely crazy.

I read the thread. Your posts are remarkably clear and easy to follow. As Ddrueding says, the guy is being stupid about hyperthreading. Unfortunately, I can't think of any simple way you can convince him that he's deluded - he sounds like he'll believe what he wants to believe. Here's a...

Two Gateway FPD1985 or one 24" 1920x1200 monitor?

If you can rotate the 19" monitors to portrait mode, I'd definitely go with them. 2048x1280 & 16:10 overall, but more importantly 1280 precious lines and PVA to boot. Otherwise, it would have to be the single 24" 1920x1200. No idea why you'd go for the 1920x1080 unless it was significantly cheaper.

Nice number crunching, JTR. You've made a convincing case. You could also look at it from the CO2 emission angle rather than raw efficiency. A typical ICE creates about 200g/km (ranging from 100 or even less for a super-efficient eco-diesel to 400 or more for a large SUV). I've attempted to...

It's a hybrid powertrain, combining an internal combustion engine and an electric motor both driving through a special type of CVT. In principle, the battery-powered electric motor is used at low speeds and the IC engine takes over at other times, although both can be combined for extra power...

I've finally received word back about the symptoms: When I plug in the pc recognizes the drive as "removable device" but when you click on the drive the message says "Please insert a disk into drive x". Windows properties shows the disk as file system RAW and no free space with 0 bytes. So...

    Is the JSF program corrupt?

Bandwidth limitations preclude it. Note that they have had to abandon video feed encryption to keep comms performance in the acceptable range. And then there's latency, particularly problematic when you're trying to control a complex high performance machine like a fighter. There is also the...

    Is the JSF program corrupt?

This Aviation Week article mentions an original source. This Air Power article says: The sustained turning performance of the F-35A Lightning II was recently disclosed as 4.95 G at Mach 0.8 and 15,000 ft. A 1969 F-4E Phantom II could sustain 5.5 Gs at 0.8 Mach with 40 percent internal fuel at...

    Is the JSF program corrupt?

The JSF has been described as a fighter designed by a committee - which of course it is. In other words, there are too many stakeholders with conflicting wishlists; as it stands, the F-35 Lightning is unlikely to improve on any of the aircraft it's supposed to replace, except for improved VLO...

What's the best wireless router these days?

Sounds like you need to chuck them and put in something decent. A PC is a lousy solution, typical power consumption 50W and poor ability to survive a hostile environment. Cisco RVS4000 is cheap enough, but specs state maximum operating temp of only 40C. D-Link DIR-130 is rated to 55C, but...

Oh, it gets better. The ISP got them to reset the old modem, i.e. wipe the settings. I no longer have any idea how it was configured, and again, I can't seem to download a proper user manual. I tried bridge mode, but no go. About this point I remembered that the ISP doesn't support PPPoE...
