Bang for the buck in AMD's 64-bit CPUs

I just spec'd a Dell dual XEON 3.06 w/2GB RAM and 2x36GB 10k drives.... $4,600+, no OS...just the box. I agree that for many people Dell's support makes it worthwhile...but I sure ain't one of 'em...

Bang for the buck in AMD's 64-bit CPUs

Yup, that's where Dell makes their money. They don't care about selling thousands of low-end/older designs at break-even or lower, so long as it wins them customers for the high-end/server market.

If you can get to the Bend River Brewery (Bend, Oregon) they have an Obsidian Black Ale that they serve on nitrogen (instead of CO2) very rich, very hearty and (thanks to the nitrogen) very, very smooth. Just the right beverage for a more bland food (one that is driving my mad with...

My playlist is at 6669 items (21 days, 10 hours, 25 minutes, 43 seconds) I somehow feel complete. I can stop ripping for now. I'd switch to a losless codec, but transcoding all this (30GB+) would be a massive undertaking. Besides, 256-384 VBR isn't so bad....

Bang for the buck in AMD's 64-bit CPUs

Yeah, I know the 64-bit aspect of it is pretty useless at this point (as was a 386's 32-bit capability) for these kinds of tasks. But from what I've seen, it's pretty darn fast @ 32-bit as well. And I do enjoy playing :D Thanks I'll have to check that out.

Splash: What are you using for new systems at work?

The first system I ever got to play on regularly was a 386/33...It was the one computer in an office of 12 accountants, and all it did was print form letters... I'd imagine all the work those 12 were doing is being done by one guy with a P90 right now.....
