    Building a dirt-cheap HTPC....

So I've chickened out and decided NOT to build and support a shoestring budget HTPC. TIVO and Console DVD Burner it is...any suggestions on model?

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

An excellent question, and one I didn't bother to answer. Shortly after working though the basics here, I realized the PC was still under warranty. F*** it, it's their problem. Called Tech suport, they quickly (within 2 hours) authorized a service visit to a local gateway country store for repairs.

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

This is the other interesting part, disk management shows the correct volume appearing and dissapearing as the disk is inserted and removed, so the hardware definatly knows what's going on.

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

I agree, it should display something, but what is showed is exactly what is shown. No CD burning software is or has ever been installed on the PC.

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

removing the drives from the machine caused an error message during post "no cd-rom drive found" that has never been seen before. It also removed the drives from the device manager and from browsing. Reconnecting the drives did away with the error and restored the drives to the same state as...

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

Answers: This problem "just started", the machine is a gateway less than 2 years old. Never opened. They are an the same cable, I will check jumpers when I crack the case. They do show properly in the BIOS NAV is running and current, SpyBot S+D was run (with full updates) 10 minutes ago...

Just to clarify: The drives are there all the time, it just won't allow me to view the contents of the drive.

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

nope, no number of reboots fixes the issue. I'm pouring through pages of knowledgebase articles, but no love yet.... I doubt it is a hardware issue as both drives exhibit the exact same behavior.

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

When a cd is inserted into either the cd-rw or dvd-rom of this machine, no files are displayed in explorer. When you select an empty drive, it prompts you to insert a disc (proper behavior) But if there is a disk in the drive, there is no prompt, just no files. In device manager the drives...

    Coffee

Yes, Coke has lots of calories and tons of sugar. But it is also an appetite suppressant ;) And yes, it will dehydrate you (caffine and sugar both have that effect) so if you drink the volume that I do without drinking water (a bottle for every can) you will wake up with a hangover. I'm 6'2"...

    Building a dirt-cheap HTPC....

Thanks for the replies so far, this was what I was worried about. My concern lies in the fact that I have to keep this thing exceptionally cheap while making it stable and versitile enough to be running his primary TV. I don't need a cable tuner, as input will be from satellite or VCR. This...

    Coffee

Don't drink coffee at all, don't like it. I do drink 8-12 cokes a day, down from my previous "24 every 24" tech support days. And switch to a Cabernet at around 5PM, then Belvedere from 10PM until 2AM. First coke in the morning at around 9AM. Yes, I'm massively addicted to many substances, but...

    Building a dirt-cheap HTPC....

Yes, another system-building thread  I need to build a PC capable of DVD playback and video capture with the following I/O: 1 S-Video in (from Satellite) 1 RCA in (from VCR) 1 S-Video out (to TV) 1 RCA out (to VCR) 1 VGA out (to secondary monitor - optional) The cheapest video card I...

    Command line DVD burning solution?

A Sony DRU-510A and a Pioneer DVR-A06, it's ok, I got it to work with the official MS stuff (that makes me feel better anyway). Thanks for the help, though. This is a really cool setup. If anyone want's a rundown on the whole deal, let me know.

ECS K7S5A Pro uses double-sided tape on NB heatsink

I always wondered about the people that bought nFOrce2 mobos with fans on the northbridge. Do they think it is faster? ASUS uses a (large) passive heatsink without issue. This solution is far less likely to fail in the future, and those with fans typically have tiny heatsinks, incapable of...

    Command line DVD burning solution?

Any help guys? I'm trying to automatically stick one file (2.2GB) onto a DVD-RW. I didn't think I'd be the only one with this issue, much less that a solution doesn't exist? dvdburn will get an ISO onto a disc, but is there a command line app that will make a file into an ISO?

The words "budget" and "Intel" haven't gone together in a LONG time... And as a more recent development, the word "fast" hasn't been with that company in a while, either. If you (like me) never plan on upgrading components, rather anticipate replacing the entire system when the time comes...

Pretty simple, really. I need to be able to burn a file created from ntbackup to a DVD-RW as part of a regular backup routine. As simple as possible and as free as possible in that order of priority. IIRC, honold mentioned there was one integrated into Server 2003 (which this machine is...
