From my experience, a single proc with gobs of memory and many spindles is the way to go. I'd take a single 2.8 Ghz Xeon (sweet price point), 3GB of RAM, and 4x73GB@15k RPM. There's a nice DB thread @ SR right now....called "sql". How much load are you expecing?

I'm in the same boat as you guys, but you chould cheat by sticking it on a seperate drive...then just reference it in the boot loader, no?

That is actually a pretty cool gizmo. I'm willing to bet my local fab shop could do something similar cheaper. I've managed to get the system on-line and live, it's now controlling all traffic to my IIS, Exchange, and Terminal servers. Port forwarding to the web server is great, but for some reason e-mail is completely flaking. Delivery of e-mail is failing, and retrieval via POP3 is failing to find the...

I use CFLs becuase of the color temp. I don't care if they're half as efficient with half the lifespan of an incandecent. I figure that with my usage pattern, it should average about the same lifespan as a standard bulb. :shrug:

I must be an idiot... Can someone tell me how to change the IP address on the Green interface? I can't find that setting on the web interface anywhere. It's not in any of the manuals, or in their forums. Everyone just says that they did it, not mentioning how...so it must be obvious. Please...

Yeah, but I was concerned about the company growing beyond the limits of SBS...so I'm running Win2k3 Enterprise, SQL2k Dev, Exchange2k3 Enterprise, etc. I'll be migrating IIS and SQL off soon enough. Those should stay on the same machine for now, as the SQL server is driving the web site...

Yup, running strong for 2 days now...running only 2 users for exchange and a SQL-based web site. Peak commit chage stands at around 700MB. CPU usage averages 4%. Happy me, the other servers are on their way.

The things that I value for the econo-desktop box in order of importance: 1. Onboard NIC, Gig-E is nice, but I won't be sweatking it for a while. 2. Onboard Sound, Sure it's crappy...but it's better than the $5 speakers every business person stole from the guy down the hall when he was fired...

CPU Usage for me on the aforementioned clip goes to 100%. CPU is an Athlon XP 3200+. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that this one is the only one of the three that has DRM-crap in it.

Which clip? The most demanding one I've seen is Scooby Doo.....and did you open it with WiMP 9?

Well, for the record, it works. I do plan on offloading many of these tasks to other servers within the next few months, but the functionality is required (for only a few users) in the meantime. It seems to be holding up quite well.

The performance difference between playing in WiMP9 vs. MPC is amazing. It's hard to believe the difference is just the extra audio being decoded.
