This sounds like an incredibly good idea to me. I'm actually looking at a PocketPC with CF 802.11 support and RDP. That way I can admin servers from the coffee shop. :D

I am now officially in over my head (again). When I was putting together plans for a firewall, smoothwall looked really cool. It's easy interface and powerfull features are very nice. And it offers one of the features that I needed: web content filtering. It does this via a program called...

    Thread revisited: Laptop recommendations

I loved my old Sony Vaio Z505. While commuting on the BART, I'd be standing with my elbow looked around a pole, the laptop open in one hand while typing in the other. The ricochet modem made it about 4.5lbs, nut I could still maintain that position for the 40-minute trip to Berkeley. IIRC, I...

No bannanas for you. Here, chew on a hard drive...it's toast anyway. I tried to overclock it. Then it started getting loud so I undervolted it, then it started getting hot so I removed the cover and mounted a Vantec Tornado instead. Hey, they both spin @ ~7000 RPM, what's the big deal?

    AD migration questions

Re: Exchange 2003. I have a few of them and It doesn't look too much different from 2000. Of of the requirements that I found the hard way is that you need a Windows Server 2003 DC to install Exchange 2003. And adding a Win2k3 DC to a Win2k domain can have it's issues. I can't really give you...

    Thread revisited: Laptop recommendations

Almost. There are laptops out there that use the Pentium-M and not the Centrino chipset (I think). At the very least there are laptops out there that use the Pentium-M, and the chipset the Centrino is based on, but a better WiFi card (or none at all). The 802.11b WiFi which is part of the...

Figuring out the graphic card universe...need for a database

to re-iterate what I said before (only correctly this time) Fill-rate is not the man, when you are doing high-end AF and AA, the GPU (proc on video card) is more important. This is where the ATI card shines. If you turn off all the eye-candy, an nVidia card will be faster. (disclaimer: I don't...

Figuring out the graphic card universe...need for a database

Sorry, my bad....GPU, not CPU. Hence the fact that it is the video card outperforming the other video card. But still not directly related to fill rate.

I'm really enjoying Röyksopp right now. I think it's more difficult to make interesting, engaging music that is slow and simple. Merc's selection above is another example.

    How long do CDRs last?

Yes, it would cost a (small) fortune. Do you have 200 DVDs worth of vital data? My current total of vital data is about 600MB. This includes past invoices, bids, quickbooks files, resumes, permit applications, etc. It does not include my 80GB MP3 collection, nor my DVDs. I cannot afford to...

    How long do CDRs last?

If you really want to keep data, keep it "live". Keeping it on 2 different hard drive arrays is the only way to guarantee it's survival. Besides the tendency of all removable media to fail, the "stick it in a drawer and count on it being there later" concept just isn't valid. I keep .ISOs of...
