REVIEW: Big Storage On The Cheap

I think they're advantage is density. Most 1U servers with this kind of capacity are full-depth (with connections in back and drives in front). Not only are all the connectors in the front, but you can put 2 ber U of rackspace (one front and one back) with a chimney in the middle to deal with...

I sold my GTI for a 2003 VW Golf: better milage and I needed to be ticket-free for a while to get my licence back. I've done over 78,000 miles in the last 2 years, and I don't see gas prices coming down any time soon, and I have my licence back so I can afford some more performance...so I think...

Assembled my first s775 system : probably screwed it.

I think that can be blamed on the slightly concave shape of the heatspreader. Add some thermal compound and a mess of pressure, and make sure that the user can't slight the heatsink off the side, and it makes for a hell of a vacum.

New Computer Money just came in

I'm really excited about the P-180. I can't buy one at the moment (I've already REALLY overspent on computer gear this month), but it is a no-brainer for my workstation.

    90 minutes on hold

Newegg is certainly spotty. I contacted them 2 days ago about a typo in the shipping address of an order and was handled within 10 minutes. I just tried calling today (I'm at a desk with a speakerphone handy) and got through in 45 minutes. Crazy.

HARDWARE: Matrox *1-Lane* PCI Express Graphics

I'd argue that firewire and digital audio are becoming less and less niche apps. (The eSATA certainly is). I have a pretty hard time finding workstation printers that even support parallel, and an even harder time finding one that doesn't support USB. Ditto mice and keyboards - they almost all...

New Computer Money just came in

The Ninja with a Nexus and a Zalman Fanmate is the most expensive cooler you can get short of water cooling, but it is absolutely silent inside a case. Hell, mine is OUTSIDE a case, inches from my ear, and completely inaudible. Keep in mind there's no point in going this nuts unless you put...

So you and the rep from your credit card company are both on hold for over 90 minutes? Ouch. Newegg is definatly the Fry's of the internet. Good selection, good prices, no service. Best of luck finding a company that offers all three for an extended period of time.

The fact that they are 4 different plugs, each with limited use and more complex that they need to be. That and they consume about 30% of the space on the backplane that could go to more usefull plugs such as Firewire, USB, Ethernet, Audio (1/8", SPDIF, TOSLink), external SATA, DVI, and maybe...

HARDWARE: Matrox *1-Lane* PCI Express Graphics

I'm quite stoked about this, as it shows that we (mainstream early adopters) will have motherboard without PCI sooner rather than later. NEWZ: Samsung's Big Plans For Flash-Based Hard Drives

Considering the newer flash storage devices are able to distribute writes evenly accross the media, lifetimes are being lengthened substantially. On a storage device this large I can only imagine that distributing the writes would make it a non-issue for the average user.

I just got back from a wedding in LA over the weekend. With the temp over a hundred and the humidity over 80%, I could feel the pollution sticking to my body. AMD to crap on customers, Q1 06

My complaints about the slot architecture are focused on the physical design rather than the cores they supported. I/O plates piss me off

The problem with standards is that they have to be standard. That means being able to accomodate at least 90% of the boards out there. There's just too many "special needs" now that so many things are integrated onto the motherboard. Many of the funkier things are now using PCI slots and...

The new boards I buy are Gigabyte nForce4 boards that have 6 audio plugs, 2 ethernet connectors, and 2 SPDIF connections. How are you going to fit that in a standard? I'm still hoping that someday soon the average board will ditch parallel, serial, and PS/2 connections. That would require...
