Pacifica looks nice, except for the fact that it's so far from my work. I still have a number of clients in the Salinas area, and I still sail my boat out of Monterey. Those would need to be a bit closer. What would make a lot of sense would be to live just south of San Jose on the 101 corridor...

Greg, the person you met was Birgit. She's german, I'm still living with her, but I'm looking for an apartment in Monterey or Palo Alto. It's been in the 80-90s here, but last night I was taking a Salsa class in Palo Alto and it was 90 with 70% humidity at 10PM (while dancing without AC). I...

    Gigabyte advanced RMA not available?

I'm running a K8N Pro-SLI right now, and have used about 40 of them (or the non-Pro variant) in the last year or so. Fortunatly, I've never had to deal with an RMA.

    Car RANT

I couldn't agree more. I was helping a friend drop the motor on his 1997 Cavalier Z and it was an absolute nightmare. He's an ex-airforce crew chief (F-117s) and said the biggest PITA was his car.

Free Dynamic DNS? Preferably for my own domain name?

I've pointed david.tweakt.com (Name/DNS hosted at downdoggy.com, site hosted by me) to ddrueding.dyndns.org and it works quite well with the DynDNS client in my DSL modem.

Pearl Jam has already ruined their sound. They used to be good, then they got therapy, now they suck. Same with Guns'n'Roses, Metallica, and countless other bands. Nirvana was awesome until the depression killed Kurt Cobain, that meant they had no time to "get better" and suck.

But that would be buying a device that is designed to perform the task required, instead of modifying a more advanced and expensive toy to perform the same task! That all depends on how good a friend it is. If this is someone who is interested in learning about computers and who you were planning on spending time with anyway, building a machine and doing the Linux thing sounds just fine. If, on the other hand, this is a "friend" (i.e. - someone you know...

Looking for a computer for a friend

I wouldn't buy a computer on e-bay. To be clear I wouldn't really buy anything that could have complex issues, or difficult to identify flaws on ebay. A very simple reason will drive most of my clients to upgrade; the stated "reccomended configuration" on some piece of software. To me, Vista looks like tons of money. Just converting one of my medium sized clients would be thousands in hardware (with margin) and 100+ hours of labor (upgrades, data migration, training). My biggest client will probably take a month or more of full-time effort to get moved over. Sure...

My mouse requires all of 40sq.in. of desk space. More is consumed by my arm resting on the desk, or by my headphones, or by the plate of food. Much more was freed up by wallmounting the LCD or the speakers. Not to mention the fact that my keyboard and mouse are wireless, thus not needing to...

    Intel strikes back

That's what I'm most looking forward to. I have several clients who are AMD-fanboys like no other. They insist on getting Intel chips beacuse they are "proven technology". I haven't had the heart to tell them that all their servers have been AMD for years.
