This is what I can build for under $2000 (charging about $3000) as a gaming PC. It includes things I would not put on my own system, but that "gamers" traditionally like (windows, 4-disk Rapor RAID-0 arrays, etc). Let me know what you think.
Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower...
Ubuntu is my favorite Linux flavor. Let's leave it at that ;)
Smoothwall 2.0 has a modified version called "superkernel" that includes support for SATA drives and a number of other enhancements. It's more stable than the last 3.0 beta I tried. I'm running it on a Tyan 1U S939 Server with SATA...
I prefer Ubuntu as well, though I don't prefer either enough to actually use it for anything. What type of performance hit do you have running in a VM session vs. running it normally? Microsoft ISA blows major chunks; smoothwall is far easier to deal with.
I was playing CNC:Generals:Zero Hour until a few weeks ago. Now I'm buried in Supreme Commander; trying to get dual screen mode working. It's a great game.
I think one of the reasons they are so screwed it that they weren't using fixed benefits. The cost of health care has gone up faster than they anticipaterd, so now they are toast. IMHO, offering anything more than a pension is asking for trouble.
Considering the amount of glass a traditional sun visor would have to cover, I'd say it would be completely impractical. You would need to use some sort of retracting cover that used rails on either side and has a support bar in front for stiffness.
Mark makes a very good point WRT what is causing our outages. IIRC, it was new accounts being added and a forced reboot? If so, wouldn't being the first account on a new server increase the number of new accounts added after us, making the problem worse?
Good porn is indeed a challenge. Particularly if you have a specific target you are aiming for.
Certain things are difficult to avoid:
Cheesy music
Fake moaning/talking
Poor camera work
Dialog of any sort other than a brief interview with the star before/after(optional)These things are really...
Eh, I doubt it costs much more than a standard windshield to replace; most of the cost is in delivery/installation anyway. I think it would be really cool, particularly at night on Hwy 1 or in SF or NYC (tall buildings)
When I was looking, the 5400+ (2.8Ghz) seemed to be the last reasonable chip before the prices skyrocketed ($269). That would place it between the T6500 (1.83Ghz) and T7200 (2.0Ghz) Intel chips. Is the C2D really that much faster clock for clock?
Pretty sure it would. I'm not an F@H guy, so I can't say for sure. The IceQ system works very well and is quiet, so I suspect 24/7 loading at 100% would be quite possible. I've even hooked up a Zalman fanmate to it in the past to make it even quieter.
:p From what I can tell, it caches certain things that benefit from the super-low access time (small files). Another tech (SuperFetch) caches entire apps (where STR is a factor) into any available RAM.
It makes sense that the Extreme IV is 4x faster, as it costs nearly 3x as much...(40MB/sec sustained...holy crap!)
Fortunately the Extreme III is only 50% more. I'll look into it. Whenever I have tried to enable ReadyBoost on anything, it says that the media isn't fast enough. I wonder how fast...
For me it's tricky. I've gotten myself down to one PC; from 4 primary machines (gaming, silent office, file/print/VM server, HTPC). Because of this, I need to do a lot of stuff. Here is what I plan on sticking in it:
Modified P180 (ducted, multi-chamber airflow)
Antec NeoHE 480W (might need...
That is my problem as well. Considering I'm using 750GB drives these days (the smallest I have is 500GB), there is no way I need 16 drives worth of storage! None of my clients even have needs on that scale.
Good to know you are having good experiences Handy, but I think I'll be going for the 590-based board anyway, just so I can have more space between the second PCIe x16 and the PCI slots.
PCI-Express X1600Pro card with IceQ cooling
Well loved but fully functional. Card only.
Best offer? Might throw it in with one of the other things I put up.
3Ware 9650SE-16ML
Still in retail box, still shrink wrapped.
Connects 16 SATA II drives
PCI-Express 8x connector
256MB DDR2 533 onboard
Uses Multi-lane SATA cables
RAID levels: 0,1,5,6,10,50,Single, and JBOD
MSRP: $995
Newegg: $909
Best offer.
I'm looking for a new AM2 board as well. Gigabyte only; based on Merc (and Tannin?)'s recommendations years ago and a flawless track record since. I currently have a GIGABYTE GA-M51GM-S2G but I need something with more slots. SLI-ing some 7950s sounds like fun, and I need to put a TV-tuner card...
If you can get a PCMCIA card small enough that you will leave it in the laptop (so it doesn't "go missing" again), do that. Otherwise, you might as well have the additional usefullness of a USB card. b+g is a definate yes; draft-n is neat, but unsupported most places and IMHO unnecessary for...
Yep Tannin, I can confirm what you've found. I do manual updates on my production servers to control when they are reset. The list for one DC in particular included IE7 a week ago. It hasn't been installed yet and last night it was no longer on the list. Very weird.
