    Something Random

Hindsight of course, but the only thing I can think of would be to seek a moment in private with the boss before the class, pointing out the issue and how it would complicate things. Not that it's likely to make anything better, but it's the only thing I can think of. She wanted to be noticed...

    Access 2000 database upgrade

Nitsirk, One of my clients is a construction company (~250 office employees, few thousand in the field) and I've been their soul source of IT since they were 20 guys in a run-down house. It is always a mess. I currently have them using HardDollar, Cheetah, and Primavera Expedition; but would...

    Office Chair

Chairs arrived today, haven't assembled them yet. I'm really disappointed in the vinyl chair mats I got at OfficeMax. I have a medium depth carpet, and the chair "settles" quite easily and requires some effort to move again. I'm looking at these glass chair mats as a solution. I'll need a...

I'd say that is a very nicely confirmed dead NIC. To be sure this doesn't happen again, you need a Killer NIC.(so it can defend itself) ;)

Coug, that sucks. I hope by the time you read this you are feeling better. Today was hot; like 75F hot. I don't like it that hot. It should be back to 71F tomorrow (perfect) But we went for a walk anyway. "The Dish" above Stanford is a beautiful 3.5mi walk that is quite pleasant despite the...

    Wireless Router & cards

WRT54G and WAP54G are both great products. I've used a LOT of them and do have about 10-15% fail within 2 years. They are a cheap commodity product, what more do you want? There are aftermarket firmwares available that can up the power significantly; I've used these with success as well...

    Antec P180 case

Bozo, The shoud is useless IMHO, I never leave it in. The fan in the PS tunnel is very useful if you are running multiple/hot drives. The PS fan is usually not enough to keep them below 35C (my comfort zone). Because of the limited space, I use only modular cabled PSs and SATA cables with a...

    Access 2000 database upgrade

Considering the process of upgrading is the pain, I wouldn't think of upgrading to 2003. That just means you'll have another upgrade even sooner. If you have Access 2007, this would be really easy to try out. Otherwise, I happen to have just upgraded and could take a look.

    Access 2000 database upgrade

I suspect that Access 2007 is a bit new to have many experiences with it. But this seems a pretty easy thing to test; how big is the data set and how many users do you have?

    Downgrade to Single Core

My experience with VMs has been mixed. Unless the machines are idle most of the time, or have a core/RAM/HDD all to themselves, the performance has been lacking. Also, MS' tech support guys won't guarantee a fix on a VM. They will provide their "best efforts" and thats it.

Best compression program (7-zip, WinZip, etc)

JPGs aren't going to compress much no matter what, so you are probably looking at a 25GB dataset. 5-6 DVDs. Be sure that the program you are using will create multi-volume sets so you don't have to break it down manually.

    Document Management System

Expensive and simple? Sounds like a fun project. Step one would be getting everything onto a single file store. If people are saving to their desktops, nothing will save them. Best compression program (7-zip, WinZip, etc)

What amount of data are we talking about? These days, most document collections don't need compression at all. Obviously, if it is over 4.7GB than compression could be worthwhile. As far as redundancy goes, why not just make multiple copies, stored in multiple places?
