Anandtech reviews the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000

All drives are Hitachi retail, except for the 750 (Seagate). Prices are current Newegg.com So, yes, 750 is more/GB, but not by that much (comparable to the 400GB drives)

    RAID 5

Ditto. Keep them the same. You could do a RAID 1 with the WD drives; then they might be as reliable as the Seagate, and you have the same 320GB of fairly reliable storage ;)

Who cares what OS you run?

My (brief and unqualified) opinion: If you are not in a position to make decisions for others, and what you have is working fine, than you shouldn't care about the OS wars. If, however, you are a "decision maker"; it's part of your job description to know everything about everything and be able...

Anandtech reviews the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000

500GB are cheap. 750GB drives are falling below $250 (that's pretty cheap right there).

I leave all the windows and patio doors open from 11AM until about 6PM. Temperature range is 62F to 72F and back down. As soon as it's below 62F I close the doors and windows, at which point the computers and lights keep it around 65-68F.

Fastest SCSI System built by German magazine?

Looks like those drives are ~$650US each, and the controller is another ~$800US. So 650*4+800= $3400. These are reportedly $350 each and boast: 32GB capacity 62MB/sec transfer rate 0.12ms access time 4 of those in RAID0 (of course) on one of these So 350*4+280=$1680 You end up with half the...

Fastest SCSI System built by German magazine?

Any of them, really. 90% of mainstream stuff is seek limited, and just about any SSD will have much faster seek times. For that kind of money you could likely get a decent-sized one with good STR as well. I'll have a look and get back with some options.

Fastest SCSI System built by German magazine?

Considering how much they spent on HDDs and CPUs, I'm dissapointed at the small maount of RAM; I would have gone with at least 8GB. Further, I would have gone without the 15K SAS array all together, getting an SSD instead.

    Nice cases

$7k for a nice system in a nice case. But the spec can easily exceed $12k (like I just did). It's amazing what options like 6x 750GB hard drive and 2x Blu-Ray will do ;)

Just bought one of these. Looking good, though my network is having other issues, causing me to connect to it @100Mbit. At this rate (4MB/sec), it will take "5 days and 10 hours" to copy 1.2TB worth of stuff over to it.

How to backup a Mac to Thumbdrive?

I just need them to be able to verify the backups. Your client needs a TeraStation at home and upgraded internet connections. The FTP server built-in should provide adequate security for the backup, and it would be separate from the kiddie-killer.

How much faith do I have in computers?

Wife? I'm afraid she's already completed her "burn in" process, so overclocking will be difficult. Though with larger heatsinks (made of gold, of course) it might be possible to run at higher speeds for short periods of time.

What would I do if I failed an EKG? Ignore it, probably. Considering it would be informal; the equipment is in her office, she has experience with it, and no-one would mind us fooling around. Were I to look into health/life insurance at some point, it wouldn't be part of any record.

The ones designed for this purpose (IIRC) are a pergo material with a really hard coating. I too have destroyed oak flooring with a rolling chair; it's not the chair, as much as the grit that accumulates and is rolled into/around the surface.

I got a (very prompt) response from the owner of the company, saying that for my needs it would have to be two parts. Total including shipping was ~$750, and total weight was ~130lbs. The GFAF* is too low, so now I'm looking at either wood or polycarbonate. *girlfriend acceptance factor
