Owning Vista from the boot : scary stuff

Not that bad. You need physical access to the machine, or to have PXE enabled. And most BIOS have a boot sector protection switch in them. Of course, the default is disabled, and PXE is enabled sometimes as default, but it's not that bad...

Powering up a Hard Drive when needed

Good idea. Also, doesn't power management only spin up drives that are being accessed? If the drive has nothing but backups on it, and windows is told not to index it, it should only spin up when needed.

Powering up a Hard Drive when needed

Basically you are looking for a way to power up/down the drive? The most elegant solution I can think of is that the Seagate external drives have a power button on the front. Of course, any power strip/switch would do.

I wasn't in choir, or anything else. I never went to a dance, except for prom, but that was about drinking, anyway. I have never attempted to "shake my groove thang" or anything of the sort. This is different, the directions are clear, and your task is well described. Speed, strength, and...

    My new system

My 7950 is passively cooled with airflow provided by a 120mm chassis fan that @800RPM is also able to cool the chipset, RAM, PCI cards (audio and TV tuner), and a good portion of the CPU (assisted by another 120mm chassis fan @800RPM). I just wrapped up a 2hr CNC3 gaming session, popped the...

About the 2900XT staying under 80C in open air? Nevermind. I'm sure they were looking for the hottest point on the card, which by the looks of it is on the backside memory modules. So it's not just the core that is cooking, it's practically the entire card. I'll likely need a separate fan in...

24TB in a single box is now possible.

This is my workstation ;) I felt that even GbE access to my data was too slow, and having another machine just to host my files too complicated. I have a server; but it only gets turned on to take another backup. 1 copy of all my data is local ;)

24TB in a single box is now possible.

I thought it was going to be a $300 MSRP, but I would happily pay $400. Maybe even $450. But now that I can support a large (24+) number of drives; it's not as important to get the largest possible.

    General musings calculating power consumption

    General musings calculating power consumption

IIRC, the only additional load for a computer is spinning the drives up. 4x running load (20W vs. 5W) is what I remember hearing. My system (see sig) never posts from a cold start (video fails to initialize). All I need to do is power it on, count to 5 (so the drives spin up), then hit the...
