Considering I'm using one computer for everything (small apartment), I don't want my CPU busy doing RAID-math. I think the card I have is pretty good (see sig).

Wedding on Saturday where I've been asked to perform. Sailing Sunday. Working Monday. 5+ disks with minimal performance requirements are the only reason to use RAID-5 IMHO. For 3-4 disks, the hassle isn't worth saving a couple drives (over RAID-10). But for my 6 drive array, it would take an...

It took 2 days to move the data off the hard drives (I had enough space elsewhere to hold all but ~700GB of it). Then I created a 5-drive RAID-5 array in a few minutes. Copying the 700GB back to the array @ ~55MB/sec (in Vista) took about 3.5 hours. Adding the now free drive to the array looks...

My machine was down while I was working on my new array, then I went rock climbing while it was rebuilding (just added the sixth drive to an existing RAID-5). I can hear the drives cranking away, but it's still at 0%. I suspect this will take a long time...

    Laptop Coolers?

You pretty much have their purpose down. It's a hard surface that has a fan or two in it. IMHO, the fans are a gimmick that manages to drain your battery (they run off USB power). So tell her just to get a book or cookie sheet (what I use) and use it a buffer. Most importantly it will make sure...

24TB in a single box is now possible.

I just got an e-mail from Seagate bragging that the new 250GB 7200.10 is a single-platter design. Now that the higher density is in higher production, I hope it brings the prices down.

Not SFF. Desktop/HTPC? Yes, but much larger than a Shuttle and more expensive than the basic ones. It does look good though. I suspect it's a matter of volume. The method of failure also counts IMO. If the SMART error counts are high but you can get the data off, it's a much better failure then "smoke and awe". WD drives seem to specialize in the latter.

So you're saying Ubuntu "Feisty" has lower system requirements than "Edgy"? I checked the release notes, but I could only find the requirements for the current version. However version 5.10 required 128MB of RAM and 2GB. Version 4.04 requires twice as much RAM.

Newegg doesn't ship drives in retail boxes. They ship them in anti-static bags tightly wrapped with an inch or more of bubble wrap in a larger box full of peanuts. I consider this satisfactory and have purchased hundreds of drives from them with only a few failures (that weren't WD) so far.

Actually, yes. Vista pre-caches the most commonly used apps even before you use them (provided your HDD isn't busy) and clears the RAM if it mis-predicted what you were going to be doing.
