It is designed as a laptop replacement drive (2.5"); I suppose the majority of laptops are still PATA. Mine is SATA, so it wouldn't help me there either.

    More Vista nonsense

From the "fix" Bozo pointed to, it seems things just work better if one OS partition can't see the other OS partition. This is basically the same as using a boot manager or removable hard drives. I don't think any of these issues would impact a data drive.

The reason I thought Supersize Me was a publicity stunt was because I'm the counter-point. I ate fast food 2-3 times a day for at least 3 years without issue. If I did eat somewhere else, it was Pizza or Burgers. No weight gain, no heart-attack, nothing. I still eat fast food at least once a...

Perhaps Bozo could clarify. When you use System Restore in XP, how does Vista do anything? If you are running XP, isn't it XP that is messing things up?

    Request advice: network storage

We can talk about how robust to make the system and how secure you want your data forever. Considering the primary storage location for your data is on your computer and this is only in case the first fails, crazy redundancy is just that. I don't think you need RAID at all, your redundancy is in...

    Request advice: network storage

If you are OK with the power consumption of your existing PC, that would obviously be the easiest solution. Considering that it will be in another room, noise and space aren't really issues. I'd just throw a hard drive in there and use the Microsoft SyncToy to send things over, it works really well.

Adding a Drive to a RAID 5 array

Writes on RAID-5 depend on quite a lot. Because of the checksum calculation, you will never get write speeds that are faster than one drive; and if the processor on your RAID card isn't fast enough, it may be much slower than that. My Bufallo Terastation is CPU limited to 6.5MB/sec for writes...

Adding a Drive to a RAID 5 array

RAID-5 arrays have many problems; slow write speed, difficulty of data recovery if more than one drive fails, slow rebuilds/verifys. These are only "worth it" IMO if you can get some form of redundancy with very little drive overhead. For my array, only 17% of my drive capacity is taken up with...
