    Vista on Laptops

I am not able to perform as direct a comparison as he, but his numbers don't seem to jive with my experience. It could be that I've never installed Vista on a machine with 512MB of RAM; I haven't built a machine with less than 1GB in years. And the CPU seems a bit pokey as well. The advice I...

    IntelliMouse Optical: Need Another

When I order a mouse I typically buy some aftermarket feet for it at the same time. As you say, without mousepads they get beat up much more. I prefer the harder feet when I'm using non-traditional surfaces.

Best Ingredient for Single Topping Pizza

After reading this thread again I had to order a pizza. Half Canadian bacon & pineapple; half Pepperoni, Canadian bacon, sausage, linguica & meatballs; hardly single-topping, but damn good.

    July 22nd Intel price drops

No doubt the reason for the $100 off starting now. I wouldn't be surprised if they did the rest of the declared cut as a series of drops to entice the impatient.

ICH8R or Gigabyte RAID? Which to use?

Yep, I know, I have one ;) I'm not saying that these features don't exist, just that they aren't nearly as useful unless you have a larger array.

Alright, so you are basically looking at the most basic HTPC rig out there; no special requirements at all, really. WRT software: I also use my HTPC as a computer, so I am using Vista Ultimate (which includes Media Center) to do my tuning/DVRing/etc. I'm sure the guys can speak up and suggest a...

Last question. Do you foresee wanting to watch TV on other computers in your house? There is a TV tuner box that connects via ethernet if you are interested. Otherwise, there are plenty of PCI-based options. What inputs does your HD TV support? IMHO, DVI would be ideal.

ICH8R or Gigabyte RAID? Which to use?

Simplicity is always a good thing. I can't say much about the management of either; but if you are sticking with RAID-1 there isn't much management to do.

Where to buy Seasonic & Which One

My system continues to have issues posting. Looks like I'm in the market for a 700W+ PSU. With support for a crapload of SATA drives. I really like Antec's modular cabling system as I ordered a bunch of additional SATA cables and added more SATA plugs on them. Suggestions?

Do you (or do you plan to) subscribe to premium channels? Encrypted HD content? If so, you may need to use one of the cable company's set top boxes (STBs) and plug that into the capture card on your machine. IIRC, the cards that can decode encrypted channels were just released to OEMs only a...

The biggest trick is what your input source(s) are. Cable? Dish? OTA? Do you want to route other sources (VCR, DVD, etc) through he same box? Do you want to support HD? Once you get this, then you can figure out which capture card you need. Then you can figure out what CPU/GPU you need to...

I am a capitalist (go figure). I feel the best way to shape people's behavior is to make it in their financial best interest. [naive idealist mode] I think the trick is to find out the true cost of any action and make sure that the person performing that action is responsible for that cost...
