One of my favorite experiences in Russia was going into this massive church and listening to the choir. They were incredible.

Suggestions for speeding up a Vista laptop

A lot of new machines ship with Vista and score about 3.0. I consider these usable. My UMPC scores a lousy 2.1, and even that is acceptable, except for the boot time.

    iPhone: what's the catch???

My cable internet has never been down in the 18+ months I've had it. In that time my Vonage telephone has never been down. While I have run out of batteries or been in a bad reception zone, my Verizon cell has never disconnected a call except for those reasons. They may not have 99.99999%...

Producer: CD quality isn't good enough

And the other question is, do most people only have stereos that can output CD-quality sound because that is the quality of CDs? If the quality of the most common medium was much higher, would the average person have a better stereo? (Excluding Tannin, of course)

I thought that both of those were only significantly better if you were outputting in more than 2 channels?

Producer: CD quality isn't good enough

It all depends on your recording quality and your playback device. I don't think I own any audio gear that could do better than what CDs provide.

Landlines are silly, but I need one for my fax. The only thing hooked up to my landline* is my fax**; no handset at all. *Landline actually is Vonage over cable internet. **Fax machines are silly, too.

WD velociraptor. It's nothing if not different

Well that is frustrating. So what you are saying is that the heatsink that makes it compatible with 3.5" brackets won't make it compatible with 3.5" SATA backplanes? Or that once removed, the 2.5" drive won't be compatible with 2.5" SATA backplanes? And that using the drive as a 2.5" drive...

    It's HOT

Yup. My place is not very well insulated, but it is usually better to keep the windows and blinds closed until about 3PM. The inside temperature lags behind the outside provided I'm not making too much heat inside (cooking, lighting, projector, etc).

    dSLR thread

After doing my research on the 450D, I was kind of expecting something like this. They seem to have put all the processing intelligence of the 40D in the 450D, making it physically cheaper (body, AF sensors, controls) but still with all the features in there. That is a pretty powerful package...

Booting a laptop off an ExpressCard SSD

I didn't want to derail Tannin's laptop thread, but I hadn't thought of this before. Is it possible to boot from a 32GB ExpressCard SSD? Are there any that are fast enough to see the "SSD benefit"? Has anyone here tried it? Googling doesn't reveal much, and the only ones I see are quite slow...

    Thinkpad, worth the upgrade?

I agree with everything Fushigi said except this. LCD backlights are on all the time, having the crystals block the light requires additional energy. Having a white background consumes barely less power than black.

    Thinkpad, worth the upgrade?

My opinion is that the biggest choke points are your RAM and your hard drive, and those can be upgraded in your current system. I would max the ram and get to a 7200RPM boot drive and pocket the change. But on inspection, it seems that there is no 7200RPM drive option in IDE?

    iPhone: what's the catch???

You do realize that you are referring to a clearly mac-fanatic site, right? I heard about the new iPhone, and although it is almost cheap enough to be worth it as a regular phone/mp3 player, it is far from a smart phone.

    iPhone: what's the catch???

Unhacked, the only provider you can get with it is AT&T (due to an agreement with Apple). Also, unhacked, for the moment, there is no way to get 3rd-party programs on it (IIRC, they are going to change that). If you want a better phone, get an LG Voyager. I've used one, and I'm thinking of...

On my 20D the RAW images were 6.5-7.5MB (8.2MP) On my 450D the RAW images are 15.5-20MB (12MP) Is there a reason that one third more pixels nearly triples the file size?

WD velociraptor. It's nothing if not different

From when I was looking, it seemed to be the same as a basic cordless phone battery (plug and everything). If you include some images, I could probably find one for you. There was also a few people who modded it to use an external DC brick rigged to a UPS.

That is very cool. I can see taking 5 steps into the garden and then not taking another step for 300 pictures. On my desk right now are some things that would be interesting to see at this level. The live view at 10x magnification should help enormously with the manual focusing.

I don't think that analogy quite holds. When you look at stuff with your eyes, there is a certain perspective*.
