    America's suburban dream?

800k? Just a drop in the bucket ;) And I don't know anyone that wants to live in San Jose; though it would be a trade-up from LA :p

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

The XP drivers always work fine in 2003 for me. The kernel is essentially the same. The only software that doesn't work is when the stupid programmers intentionally break it. Here is a fanless AGP video card with 2 DVI connections.

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

Correct. They used the spare pins in an s-video connector to sneak out composite cables. They are only accessible with the included composite break-out box. Composite is outdated tech, and it wasn't around long enough to have/keep products in the market.

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

For only very light gaming, I would get this card. For something more powerful (still not that great) I would get this one.

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

S-Video sucks (limited to 800x600). So does VGA (looks bad above 1024x768 IMHO) The only acceptable connections are: DVI and HDMI. I use a DVI to HDMI cable (they are essentially the same data, just different plugs). Any video card with DVI out should do fine.

    America's suburban dream?

I live in a downtown area now, and am considering moving to the country (10+ acres of land, 0.5 mile to nearest neighbor, 10 miles to town). Suburbs always struck me as the worst of both worlds; you have to interact with your neighbors, but you are still too far to walk to the...

    Monitor Dying?

Bozo's suggestion looks fine, but I would recommend this one. *Dual DVI outputs, so you can run multiple monitors if you like. *Fanless, so no noise (and presumably less heat to begin with). *GeForce 8xxx series, so it supports recent standards (DX10 for Vista) *HDMI support for secure video...

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

I'm not a fan of wide screen either, but it gave me my minimum requirement (1000+ pixels vertical). I love the fact that I can view images @ 100% and still see every pixel; on my 22" 4:3 1600x1200 LCD I had to zoom to 200% to see every pixel; making this one effectively twice as large. It also...

    LCD failure rate? Spectre?

DVI-HDMI cables are very common, I'm using one to drive my Sharp 42".

Well, it was moving along nicely until it filled the 80GB of free space on the Raptor array, it then decided to pick on the RAID-5. It won't fill that one up, but it has already taken a 50GB chunk out of it.
  11. ddrueding

    LCD failure rate? Spectre?

Massive power consumption advantage. 99% of it is becoming heat either way, so you can judge by the amount of heat coming off the device. At that resolution (1680x1050), DVI begins to make a difference. DVI sends the signal digitally, and provides specific instructions to each pixel. VGA is...

I just sent it on it's merry 210 megapixel way...we'll see how long that takes ;) It might take longer because it is outputting as a 32-bit HDR and a 16-bit TIFF.

I do have some decently fast disks to use as scratch, and 4 cores @ 3.5Ghz. That can't hurt. I'm about to buy the Pro version and send it onto the rest of the set (that was only a subset).

Just finished playing with PTGui Pro trial. I threw it 120 images (40 sets of 3 bracketed exposures). Total size of the source files? 6.8GB Total size of the completed pano? 4.5GB. It took 3 hours for my system to chew on it, with the hard drive being the limiting factor (CPU usage was ~13%)...

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

You are correct. Buying anything today that isn't 1080P is a significant mistake.
  16. ddrueding

    LCD failure rate? Spectre?

LCDs, as a technology, no longer count as new. I don't know of anyone still making CRTs at all. Spectre is a cheap brand, expect cheap quality. I buy either of the other brands you mention for that reason. I also make sure that it has dual inputs (DVI and VGA or 2xDVI).
  17. ddrueding

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

Agreed. If you are going to use a TV as a monitor, it must be at least 720P (1080P is ideal) and must have a digital input (DVI/HDMI). Anything else is going to suck.

    Borrowing 4TB?

Sweet! I have never compiled a kernel, or even looking into it. And the places I was reading said otherwise, but I believe you. I'm using a standard build of Ubuntu 8.04 x64, so I guess that support isn't included? I'll go read up on it. Thanks!

I've seen similar stuff on laptop LCDs, but it was due to mishandling. I doubt that is the case here. Is the line perfectly vertical? How many pixels does it affect?

Grammatically that may not be accurate but it got two points across. 1. It is too early to be shooting. 2. Why am I doing it? I have reached the age my older friends had warned me about. I'm chickening out on that. The bit that is supposed to be 42 for dynamic, that I'm supposed to change to 07, is showing as EE. Not sure what that means, but I like my data too much to be fooling around with it. I'll just hold off for a while.

    Borrowing 4TB?

Flash drives are for the OS and APPs, the RAID-0 of 74GB Raptors are for scratch and games, and the massive chunk of 750GB drives are for data. My car averaged 33mpg, and gas averaged $4.12. About 9700 miles in 2 months. (I was in Russia when the intermediate bill came).
  37. ddrueding

    Borrowing 4TB?

For later integration in my array, I'd stick with 750GB drives. 4000/750 = 6 Drives @ $120 = $720 + Tax = $777 ...and I just got a $1200 gas bill (just my car). I'd like to avoid that for now.

    Borrowing 4TB?

In a late-night moment of stupidity about 6 months ago, I converted my array to a dynamic disk. It hasn't been a big deal, because Server 2003 doesn't care. Now I'm moving to Linux, and it can't see dynamic disks. The only way I've read to "convert" back to a basic disk is to copy the data...

Is Ubuntu the nix that finally brings Linux mainstream?

Think of it as add/remove programs, but better. You can add programs as well from the internet master repository, and it has a search feature and a summary of each program. It also tracks and handles dependencies (eg. .NET framework or Adobe Flash)

    iPhone: what's the catch???

There are a few companies that provide cell phone service. Is Ubuntu the nix that finally brings Linux mainstream?

The thing that has stopped me from deploying Ubuntu in a corporate environment is the inability to niche windows applications (Street Smarts, HardDollar, etc).
